MEREDITH, New Hampshire (Reuters) – From his wooden fishing shack on Lake Winnipesaukee's thinning skin of ice, Mike MacDonald doesn't need to think twice about why more Americans are going "fishin'" in the deepening U.S. recession.

I only hope the fish and game people "plant" more fish this year. I know here the rivers and streams are "seeded" based on demand. I have a free lifetime hunting and fishing license, but I don't hunt or fish.

Ally desperately wants to go fishing. I don't fish anymore - I did as a kid, tho. We have twin boys next door int he same grade as Ally. Their dad, David, has promised to take her when the weather warms up. As long as i don't have to clean them!

Fortunately, that huge forest fire we had didn't get to the federal fish hatchery or there would have been a lot of sad people around here. Fishing season starts in a few weeks. Who knew there was a fishing season?
