Tonsil--Shona (and Kim)

I just have a minute but I'll pop back on later, but Shona could you tell me what it was like when (I forget which boy had them out recently) your son had their tonsils and adnoids out? Zachariach is being referred to a pediatric ENT and my pedi thinks he had mild sleep apnea (mouth breathing) causing or resulting from the swollen tonsils which are touching and he has has ear pain, sore throat and belly pain from post nasal drip from cronic congestion which is also presenting as dark cricles under his eyes (he said it's a classic sign of chronic congestion along with lack of sleep not just the lack of sleep). He hasn't eaten on anything but popsicles and ice cream in two days. I've been at the schools PA 3xs this week. I finally went to my pedi last night. I went to the pedei in FL the last weeek in Feb. and he was on 10 day od amoxicillian but it did nothig so my guy is going with getting rid of the tonsils. Since there is no fever but the kid is obviously "quite ill" as Zachariah puts it. He also ran a full blood panel and mono test. I got that done this am.

Noah is now on Nasonex b/c we think he has allergies like me which we thoght from birth but we didn't want him on allergiy meds at such a young age but it's gotten to the point where it is a quality of life issue. He constantly has a runny nose. We'
ll have to give the Nasonex about 2 weeks to work then maybe I'll p[ush for Zyrtec also. I'm on Zyrtec and Singulair and am going to go to an allergist b/c they aren't even cutting it anymore mine are so bad.

So any tips, concerns?

Re: Tonsil--Shona (and Kim)

Getting their tonsils and adnoids out was the best thing we ever did for two of my kids. Now, Teagan had his adnoids out but not his tonsils. It didn't take long at all and the little ones, they put to sleep before they put an IV in ( at least here) Duncan was older and they gave him something like Versaid (sp?) Wish I had the video cam, that kid was FUNNY! The worst part was them waking up, THAT was horrible. They were scared and in pain. Same day we went home and they were great, took their meds felt really good a few hours later. Told us not to give them ice cream but they could have popcicles.

Poor kids!

Yup like Shona it was the BEST thing we did for Christian. We had tonsils and adenoids out. We got there at 6 and were home by 9:30 I think and that included running to the pharmacy to get his meds. Christian had quite a few panic attacks after waking up which made it painful to watch but other than that it was great. Oh and Christian wasn't given his IV until he fell asleep and we were in the pre op room until he fell asleep.

Re: Tonsil--Shona (and Kim)

My dd (the 3 yr old) just got her tonsils and adnoids out on Jan 21. Her tonsils were HUGE and affecting her breathing. The surgery was much easier than I expected. We got there at 8am and we were home by 2pm. She ate ice cream and drank juice right away. Of course she was groggy and a little grouchy! The day after was the worst because all the drugs they had given her wore off and she REFUSED to take the pain meds they prescribed. After about a week she was eating normally and not complaining of pain at all.

Good luck! Alyssa sleeps SO much better now!

Re: Tonsil--Shona (and Kim)

Can I ask why they had them out? Is it similar to what I described? I'm so happy---I called the pedi ENT surgeon and they were booked solid but (Praise Jesus) he added 2 appts. for TOMORROW. I took one for 9:45 am. So at least I'll know either way if he thinks the tonsils and/ or adnoids are a problem. IMO (non medical opinion) if they go in there why not take everything out? Both tonsils and adnoids? Anyone know? Do they actually do anything? I could look it up but why when I have you girls who know EVERYTHING! Thanks so much.

Re: Tonsil--Shona (and Kim)

Christian's were HUGE. You could look in his mouth and wonder how on earth the food passed between them. He also had chronic ear problems--sorta still does He has the black circles under his eyes He hasn't been as sick. I mean he still gets colds obviously but it isn't a continuous one that never leaves

Re: Tonsil--Shona (and Kim)

We all still have our tonsils.... but I remember when my sister had hers out. She did fine...things pretty much go as the girls before me had said. Much smoother procedure now then when my sister had hers out.

Re: Tonsil--Shona (and Kim)

Both my girls had them out becuase they were HUGE. Kimmy had hers out when she was 4. Her tonsils were so big the touched each other. Alyssa's were so big that the little thingy that hangs at the back of her throat (sorry don't know the medical name for it ) was laying on one of her tonsils because it had no room to hang down.

Re: Tonsil--Shona (and Kim)

Ian snored like a lumberjack with a jackahmmer and that is putting it nicely. his were.. HORRIBLE, and he was still sounding like a baby even at almost 6 yrs old.

Duncan's were huge as well and he had some throat problems and swallowing issues.

Teagan's were because of his ears. Left the tonsils but took out the adnoids.

It was funny, the night of the surgery I couldn't sleep.. I kept making sure Ian was still breathing

Re: Tonsil--Shona (and Kim)

Let us know what you find out. Emily has allergies too and her adnoids were huge. She had chronic ear problems, but now that she is on singulair and allegra, it's better. She still snores (not as bad as Shona's Ian did, but sometimes it's bad!). If the medicine had not worked, though, the doctor was going to remove her adnoids, but not her tonsils.
I can tell you when Travis had his hernia surgery, it was much as Shona described. They gave him goofy juice to relax him, but it made him grumpy, so we called it grumpy juice, but then they let one of us go back to the OR and stay with him until he was asleep. Kyle did this because I could not do it. Then once he was alseep, they put the IV in. Waking up was the hard part, it was just the way Shona described it.
Be sure to let us know what the doctor said.
