Obama said WHAT?

I have mixed feelings about his statement. At first I was thinking I can't believe he is making fun of how bad the handicapped people are at the special olympics.

Then I think, you know what is the big deal? The movie Tropic Thunder had the word retared in it like 500 times and not a whole lot was done about that. He was basically making fun of his own game.

I honestly don't think he met anything by it. I think the only reason this is being taken so far out of context is because he is "the commander and cheif,"

Lets face it ladies, he is not like any other president we have had (closest being Clinton I think). He is younger, more down to earth. He is responsibile and "mature" when he needs to be. I think we need to cut him some slack and just let him be normal. If it were a comedian (and I have heard comedians say MUCH worse) I don't think it would have been thought twice about.

I hope I don't offend anyone with my opinion. Its just my thoughts.

Stacy, I seriously doubt you would be asking that if you had a child or a close friend or relative who is a Special Olympian. And I personally HATE the word retarded. So I am glad I did not see the movie Tropic Thunder. You have not offended me with your opinion, but I couldn't disagree more.
My brother-in-law is paralyzed and he and my sister coached Special Olympics for years, and I think what the president said is ridiculously insensitive, thoughtless, and rude. And yeah, I would feel that way even if a comedian said it.

I agree, Wendy! Let's face it, we are all one aneurism, one stroke, one head or spinal injury away from being "like someone in the Special Olympics," and that's true no matter who you are or what position you hold in life--even for our illustrious president. I think it was a jerky thing to say, and if that is the best he can do on his own/ad-libbing, then he needs to only speak when someone has written it for him and he has a teleprompter to tell him what to say, when to say, and how to say it.

Re: Obama said WHAT?

His statement just made me cringe. Not because I was horribly offended (who here has not made an offensive joke of some sort?) but because he is the president of our country and I felt ashamed. Yea we like that he is a "real person" we can relate to but he is and should be held to a higher standard than your average Joe. We have so many other things to worry about as a country and I hate that he put us in a position where all this attention is being put on a faux pas and not the issues.
Stop trying to be the relatable guy, get off the late night shows, and deal with the problems our country is facing.

Re: Obama said WHAT?

I think it was pretty disrespectful too by saying that. I also believe it might have been one of those moments he said something he really didn't mean to say and didn't have any intention on hurting anyone. He might have felt bad about saying that too. He did apologize which was the right thing to do. He is human and we all say things we really don't mean or have our insensitive moments. If he was insensitive all the time and never apologized for those kind of remarks then I'd be more furious about it.

I do agree with Elaine. He doesn't need to be on night time comedian shows. I think he needs to stick to press conferences and maybe appear on Larry King (or shows similar to that) occassionally talking about our country's issues.

Exactly.
And everyone should take a look at Cheryl's quote in her signature. Maybe it was a slip of the tongue, but like it says, your thoughts become words and so forth.

I wish someone else would come on a put into eloquent words what I'm thinking.
Where's Dana? She's usually the one who can nail it when it comes to stuff like this!

Re: Obama said WHAT?

What the heck was he doing on Late Night, anyway? Since when does the president of our country to television talk shows? I don't like him and its only going to get worse. To give the guy a break, he has only been in office for 2 months, so I am willing to cut him some slack. But not this time.

Re: Obama said WHAT?

It was disrespectful but it wasn't said with that intention. It was said in a moment of thoughtlessness (is that a word?). Special Olympics athletes are pretty amazing (strong and resilient), I don't think they would have been overly offended.

He has a long way before he has a collection of embarrassing moments like the guy before him has lol.
