Re: Clean Your Room!

Maree, that is not encouraging.

I tell myself it doesn't matter, then I think of all the people I have met who did not know how to take care of themselves by the time they got to college and I think "yikes! I don't want that to be my kids!" The room is just a small microcausm for life.

Re: Clean Your Room!

I don't have other kids, but my room looks like it was put into a blender

Re: Clean Your Room!

Oh don't get me wrong, they know how to clean, they just have to many other important teenage things to be doing like: sitting around staring at the idiot box, sitting around on the computer, sitting around playing the xbox, sitting around playing on the PSP. (can anyone else see a common thread developing here )

Re: Clean Your Room!

You can't really control your kids to create mess on your room or on your house but you can let them learn where to put their toys after playing.

Re: Clean Your Room!

Had to laugh at this post Lenora...
Jim and I together tackled Tessa's room today and she is 9. Her sisters are way better at cleaning then she is. We hauled out three bags of junk (trash, school papers, happy meal toys etc...) and have another bag of stuff to donate.
It was on the list to be done in three weeks on my moving schedule, but when she couldn't find her homework in the mess today it became a high priority for us.
Needless to say she isn't very happy now that she is home from school and has seen her clean room.

Re: Clean Your Room!

I am big on organization to help the little ones know where to put their things.Ibought a tall plastic drawer thingy and then labeled the drawers. Their room still gets very messy but at least they don't feel as overwhelmed cleaning it up this way.

I generally just have my kids clean their rooms once a week and shut their doors on other days. I am very OCD with cleaning and I don't want my children to grow up feeling like they can't make messes.

When mine reach 16 they can fend for themselves, do their own washing, help with the cooking or cook their own etc.

The 'plan' is if I get them preparing for the real world at 16, they won't be so hopeless at 18. When I left home at 18 I barely knew how to cook, clean properly thanks to my super-mom hehe. However I spent 18-22 living relatively poorly (eating poorly, being messy).

Heather! I would have loved to have seen her face. That's what she gets for making her folks clean her room.

Re: Clean Your Room!

Thanks a lot for the tips. It is very important to maintain cleanliness, then only children will learn something good.

Re: Clean Your Room!

my 4 yr old is a super cleaner. Sometimes I think she has OCD!!! Kidding, but she is very keen on yelling at the older ones to help mommy out. The older ones on the other hand I have to threaten to take things a way to get there rooms clean.
