Best breast pumps?

Out of four breastfed babies I never really pumped with any of them. I was extremely blessed to be able to stay home with them and really never needed to. With Zachary I tried a bit but had a cheap pump and I hated it!! Never tried again actually-LOL
With Parker I am going to have to go back to work and I really want to have a good breast pump. Money is really no object because Jim and I feel that this is a good investment to have. I know that hospital grade pumps are the best but where to you go about finding one and what is your experience with breast pumps/brands etc?
Thanks for the help ladies!!

I have the yellow little pump in the bag lol, I got it from a friend for about 140 and I just bought band new parts for it, it works well but the down side is, the breast shield things, the smallest is the big for me... and I had to special order the small size.

Re: Best breast pumps?

Try the hospital where you are going to deliver. I know I could have rented/bought one from my hospital if I wanted too. I have a cheapo electric one I use in a pinch. Not the greatest but does what I need it too. Wouldn't recommend it for all the time pumping.

I was going to say to try to rent a hospital grade pump. It's a good investment, and I have used both a hospital grade and a really nice Medela pump, and the hospital grade pumped more and pumped faster. If you found a lactation consultant (ask your ob/gyn or check at the local hospital) or contacted the La Leche League, you should be able to find someone who rents these.
I actually had a hospital grade Medela (given to me by a lactation consultant), but we literally just gave it away yesterday to a guy Kyle works with.
If you can't find someone to rent one from, then try to buy the nicest Medela you can. It is a good investment.

Re: Best breast pumps?

I plan on buying a ameda purely yours. I did some research on consumer reports and decided I wanted a pump that is sealed. Not all of them are and if milk leaks into the inside, it can mold/mildew, which is this pumped through the tubes. The newest Purely Yours has a removable, washable diaphragm that protects the inside stuff.

Re: Best breast pumps?

Well for me someone bought be a manual pump for my shower. My girls were much too big for it and it did not work very well. I got maybe a teaspoon of milk after pumping for 15mins.

So my LC recommended me to the hospital grade ones that were electric. I only rented it bc I didn't want to buy one incase it didn't "fit" or it just didn't work.

I brought it home and I tried to use it, turned it on to the low position and it felt like my nips were being taken off! It was terrible. I said never again would I try to do it, and then shortly after that my milk supply dried up out of no where.

Re: Best breast pumps?

Yeah, pumping isn't a comfortable experience, and for the pump to work effectively, your nipples have to be sucked down into the thing that goes over your breasts. I hated pumping, but I did do it sometimes out of necessity.

Re: Best breast pumps?

Medela breast pumps are the only ones that I've had any luck with.

Re: Best breast pumps?

I've used the Medea Pump In Style Advanced for both my boys for over a year each. I had 2 so I could leave one at work. I hated the manual and also had one I kept in the car then I bought the car adapter for the Mandela.

Re: Best breast pumps?

I ended up buying a used Medela Pump in Style double pump in the shoulder bag. I just have to buy new tubing and membranes but I heard that if you take your pump to the hospital that they will give you new ones for free. I plan on taking it to the hospital anyway so that I can have a LC help me out with it since i have no real experience pumping.

Re: Best breast pumps?

FYI for others reading this, the WIC office loans out theirs for free and gives you the extra tubing/diaphrams and other stuff you need.

Re: Best breast pumps?

There are many breast pumps available. Choose the one that fits the needs of you as well as your baby. You need to choose the breast pump upon how frequently you use the breast pump. If you are a working women then its better to have an electric breast pump. The Electric breast pumps saves the pumping time and makes the pumping work easy for the mothers.
