Upholstered Headboard

It seems easy enough ... plywood, a few 2x4s to keep it raised off the floor, foam, batting, fabric, and a staple gun. I'm just wondering if anyone here has ever made one.
I'd like to have one for my room. Someone gave me a mattress set larger than what my headboard fits and I miss having something on the wall behind the bed.
I'd also like to have a few buttons on it and am wondering what methods I can use for that. My thought was screws and nuts through the headboard and then glueing the buttons on. Do you think that will work? How to I make the holes through the plywood, foam, and fabric? Do I need to use washers so they don't eventually tear through the foam and fabric?

Re: Upholstered Headboard

The problem with getting a new headboard is that my bedroom set is french provincial ... that old creamy yellow with gold detailing (I know, yuck, but it's a full set with 2 dressers and I can't afford to replace all that) ... I don't think I could find anything to match. I figured matching an upholstered headboard to my EB quilt was easier than trying to match yellow wood.

Re: Upholstered Headboard

Its not that difficult. If you use the wood that already has the holes drilled into it (can't rmember what it is called), putting the button in is ALOT easier. Yeah, I have done this for a twin bed for my neices. They make special button with flat backs for just this kind of thing. But You can use regular buttons. It isn't cheap, but it's not difficult.
