Defense spars with victim’s family at trial

GREELEY, Colorado–Angie Zapata’s mother, sisters and friends took on the defense on the second day of the trial of the man accused of killing her last July. Zapata, a transgender female, was bludgeoned to death in her home in Greeley, Colorado, allegedly because she was biologically a male living as a female.

I figured this would be a debate, so I just posted it here.

Re: Defense spars with victim’s family at trial

It's a pity the victim's lifestyle seems to be on trial instead of the defendant's. I don't care if she lived her life as Santa Claus. That doesn't give anyone the right to brutally murder her even if her biological identity was a shock. He was shocked. So what? People get nasty surprises all the time. And they don't think about, then kill someone over it.

Quote:
The accused, six-time convicted felon Allen Andrade, isn’t denying he’s the killer.
It's sad his lifestyle "choice" of being a habitual criminal isn't on trial. So, he just keeps committing crimes and now he's blugeoned someone to death. What's next on his criminial agenda? He belongs in jail for life, because he obviously likes committing crimes more than staying out of jail.

People may not like this woman's lifestyle, but it isn't illegal to be transgendered or lie about almost anything you please. However, it is illegal to be a habitual criminal and beat people to death. Really, with a long criminal history and now, this guy has beaten someone to death, how many more crimes does he have to commit, how many more people have to die, before society throws away the key on this guy? There is no hope for rehabilitation here. Next time, he may kill a regular woman.

Someone should have set Angie aside a long time ago and talked to her about what a consists of. I don't care what your born gender is, this guy was someone to aviod.

Re: Defense spars with victim’s family at trial

Well unless you are defending yourself or your children, I don't think there is ANY cause for murder. I think the guy needs put away. It wasn't right to kill over something like that. I mean, I'm sure it was traumatic for the guy BUT come on....murder? I could see a punch or something (well I hate physical violence unless it is needed) but I could see that reaction more so then beating the guy completely to death! That takes a lot of rage that needs dealt with.

But at the same time the deceased was wrong in lying like that. I mean seriously if that is the way you are leading your life, you need to tell the person you are dating before you start dating. But I still don't see it as something to be killed for.
And unless Angie legally changed her name then the defense has every right to call "Angie" Justin.

Re: Defense spars with victim’s family at trial

Legally, people have the right to use any name they please, as long are they are not using it for illegal purposes. I know - I used the last name Spagnola for years before I had it leglly changed when I got divorced. I even had it on my SS card and drivers license before it was legally changed. Nothing anyone could do since I wasn't using it illegally. The defense was only using her birth name to try to throw the jury into confusion and play on the fact that Angie used to be a man.

Either way, it doesn't matter. What matters is that the defenadant killed her. He admits it, so why is she on trial? Why is her lifestyle on trial? He is a career criminal who needs to die. Period. I don't even know why its going to trial. Send him to Texas. We have a needle with his name on it.

Re: Defense spars with victim’s family at trial

But at the same time they didn't have to call her anything BUT Justin because that is what was on her birth certificate. Maybe it is different state to state. I know for certain things, it would have been questioned. That isn't the point--I was just reading the comments of the article and let a lot of it come here because I wasn't commenting there.

I don't think that person needs on trial either. There isn't an excuse for killing that person--not for that reason. Go to counseling like the rest of the world and try to move on--don't murder because of it. (BTW--i have nothing against counseling--I've grown up with a mom who has gone her whole life)

Re: Defense spars with victim’s family at trial

Same here, Wendy. Some of those people yapping at CNN seem to have lost track of the fact this guy is a career criminal. He made crime his line of work. He thought about her originial gender for a day and half, and the thought, "I don't want to spend the rest of my life in jail" didn't cross his mind? Six times in jail wasn't deterant enough to keep him from doing things that would send him right back. Besides he beat her, left. Came back. Saw she wasn't dead and finished the job. That's pretty premeditated, if you ask me. He lives in some state without the death penalty. He's whining about life without parole, because he wants the chance to roam the streets again. If I were on his jury, he could just make his schedule for the rest of his life and it would say one thing - jail.

I wouldn't let him out even if it wasn't premeditated, because his record shows, he is a permanent threat to society. If six times in jail, didn't change him, nothing will.

Re: Defense spars with victim’s family at trial

I think it's just totally sad that this happened. Someone should have warned her about meeting men on the internet, and I agree with Wendy, she should have been up front about herself--about being transgendered. Not saying that she deserved to be murdered. People are crazy and full of hate and unpredictable. The world is not a kind place, and she should have known, right or wrong, that being transgendered put her more at risk of being a target, and she should have been more cautious. I say this only because if she had been, she could have avoided this guy altogether.
I was shocked to read he's a six time convicted felon. He should have been in prison before all this happened. He definitely deserves life in prison at the very least.

Re: Defense spars with victim’s family at trial

But she was upfront about it - that's what got her killed. I mean, you don't tell relative strangers something like that, but you have to try to get to know someone before you tell them. She was honest and look what it got it. This guy just needs to die. Like Lenora said, if 6 times in jail didn't rehabilitate this guy, then nothing ever is. I wish he lived here. People like that shouldn't be allowed to live on the taxpayers money. Send him off and let God deal with him.

Re: Defense spars with victim’s family at trial

She was up front about it. She had only met him in person for two days. She met him and took him to her apartment which was apparently covered in photos of her both in her male and female life. She met him through a mobile networking site. I can understand waiting to tell something like that in person not by text message.

Here are some more articles on the subject:

Apparently, she did not hide what she was to anyone:

Quote:
Zapata's friends and family say she was attractive and got a lot of male attention. But, they say, she always told men she was transgender. Neighbors who didn't know her well said they could tell she was a man who dressed and lived as a woman.
