MORE BF blues

So, I went back to the Dr. today about the blood in Ava's stools, I think I mentioned it in a post on the Baby Basics section....

So, my Dr. wants me to stop bfing for 2 weeks and see if Ava's stools clear up. I am going to continue to pump during this time. I am supposed to give her her nutramigen (sp?) formula with cow's milk proteins broken down exclusively during this time. If this doesn't help I have to take her to see a Gastrointestinal Specialist. I really hope that it's my breastmilk. Just makes me sad b/c I wanted so badly to bf. I have already cut all dairy from my diet and there was no change in her stools during this period. Guys please send prayers, finger crossing, good thoughts - whatever! for my little baby.

Good news is that she is up to 7lbs 11oz now.

Re: MORE BF blues

It can take up to 2 weeks for all the dairy to get totally out of your system. If your breastmilk bothers her then odds are formula will also, unless you get one without any milk in it. Even if you get one with milk broken down, the milk is still in there and it's still going to irritate her If anything your bm is going to help her, if she has an infection or something that's going to help her out tons. Your Dr's advice makes no sense to me at all. You should check out www.kellymom.com and www.drjacknewman.com They give great advice there. You could also try www.diaperswappers.com it's a sister site to BBU, and you'll likely get TONS of advice from other mamas there. I hang out there quite a bit and a lot of them are very helpful ( yeah it's mostly about cloth diapering but we have a bunch of topics just like here.)

Re: MORE BF blues

Thanks to both of you. I will def go onto those sites and take a peek at the info. I am trying not to read too much about things right now, just because I get upset. I really hope the milk is all that it is.

Re: MORE BF blues

I agree with Becca. I don't really think that stopping breastfeeding is the way to go IMO. Try also cutting all caffine and ANYTHING with dairy. Otherwise, I would just ask the dr to send you to the specialist now without stopping the nursing. No formula is better then breastmilk regardless of what some doctors think. And fyi-no one here will judge you if you decide not to bf. You do what YOU think is right for Ava. We are just here to give our oppinions if asked
Also, if your nipples were cracked and bleeding in the begining then the blood in Ava's stool could be YOUR blood from that.
