Thinking of going back to school

In looking back to the last time in my life I was really happy with myself and everything else, I was in school. So I have been thinking about going back to finish my degree. We probably don't qualify for financial aid, so I am looking into scholarships, since I was an honor student and I'm now considered an "older" mom. If I do it, it will mean alot of changes around here.

What do ya'll think?

Heck ya do it! I am also going back to school to get a different degree. See what FASFA has to off you.

Re: Thinking of going back to school

I say go for it!!! Of course I would. My suggestion is go talk to the financial aid at the college you are considering, that and do your FAFSA of course. Look at it this way... with or without school you are going to get older, may as well do what you want... You are not too old!

I agree with the other ladies! Go for it!

Re: Thinking of going back to school

I don't think anyone is EVER too old to go back to school! I'm just worried about the impact me being a full time student will have on the kids. I have TONS of problems, especially with Drew, and I'm concerned about the time factor. I tend to get totally wrapped up in studing, etc and am worried about how much they seem to need me these days. If I can't be an honor student, then I see no point in going back until I can. Yeah, I'm really anal about grades!

Go back part- time maybe?

Re: Thinking of going back to school

I hear you on the Anal about grades thing.... and I won't lie. It can be hard to balance full time school with the family. I would try two classes at first, and see how it goes. That's enough for financial aid (it's more than half time) and give you an idea of how much time that will take.

Re: Thinking of going back to school

Can't go part-time. From what the school (UofH) is tellingme, the only way I am going to qualify for any type fo financial aid is if I am going full time.

Re: Thinking of going back to school

hmm... Okay, all the schools I have attended, as long as you were more than part time you qualified for financial aid, just not as much.

Re: Thinking of going back to school

Well try to get a grant maybe? There HAS to be a way for you to go to school and get a loan

Quote:
Are you working full time and going to school? It is more common now for students to work while they are obtaining their degree. And even more common is the use of financial aid and student loans to pay for their tuition. There can be a gray area about how much you are eligible to receive if you are not attending school on a full time basis. So first lets clear up what is considered full time and what is considered part time.
Your school determines your official status. Most schools classify 12 credits as full time, while other schools consider 9 credits full time. For part time students it is usually 6-9 credits, and anything under 6 credits is usually considered below part time (which means you would not be eligible for aid or federal loans). Remember that school’s determine your actual status, and not every school uses these guidelines to determine a student’s status.
So that being said, if you are eligible for grants from the Federal government, then your grant amount is directly correllated with your status, so you will get less if you are a part time student. Loans can be different, and this is where we enter the grey area. The subsidized Stafford loan and the Perkins loan are loans that are based on financial need, meaning you have to show you need those loans in order to get them. These loan amounts can be decreased if you switch from a full time student to a part time student. Unsubsidized Stafford loans are not based on financial need, which means that regardless of your status (but must be at least part time) you can typically get up to the amount in which you are eligible for based on your classification as a student (independent v. dependent). I use the word “typically” because there is no clear cut “rule” for this, and it up to the school and their policy, but most school’s do work this way

I don't qualify for FAFSA - Rick makes too much money. And I really don't want to take out any more loans. I already owe $6K

Yeah, it does. I'm looking into scholarships since I was an honor student while getting my AA. Keep your fingers crossed!

Re: Thinking of going back to school

Yes it is alot of changes. I am in school still and I have a 19 month old daughter who demands alot of my attention. So I study while she is sleeping which is easier for me since she is younger and not older like your kids. Its time management consistently, and you have to stick to the flow of things to get studying done. I am finishing to get my BS in paralegal studies online, (which would be easier to do).

Re: Thinking of going back to school

I tried online studies and I don't do as well. I need the structure of having to get up and actually attending class. Plus, I thrive in the classroom setting (social) and I want to get involved again in campus activities. That means alot to me.
