baby-safe migraine med?

Thread Starter
Hi, I’m Sally, and an expectant mother. I am a migraineur and although my doctor told me that my medications (fioricet/Lortab) are fine while I’m pregnant, I’m still cautious of my baby’s health so I only take the meds during severe migraine attacks. I hope that these medications are indeed ok for my baby’s health. Any input regarding my situation? Thanks.

Re: baby-safe migraine med?

I think it's smart to limit (or take in moderation) any unnecessary medication while pregnant. I wouldn't however stress over it when you have to take it.
If you can feel a migrain coming on try some home remedies first ... eat a salty snack (some people swear by this) and lay in a darkened room with an ice pack on your neck or forehead.

Re: baby-safe migraine med?

I feel your pain. But congratulations! I am also a migraineur and in my case, I was allowed (by my doctor) to still take fioricet for heavy attacks. Do talk to your doctor about it. Also, if you haven’t tried it yet, use a wet towel and place it on your face while staying on a dark, quiet room. That helps soothe the pain. Hope this helps!

Very wise decision, its better to avoid medicines during pregnancy, I being a dentist prefer to avoid medicines for my patients, and give them medicines only in emergency

Re: baby-safe migraine med?

This diary should include when the headache happened, what “triggered” it, and how long it lasted. If you keep a log of your headaches, you can learn what triggers them and therefore avoid those things. Common triggers may include but are not limited to:
  • Stress
  • Chocolate
  • Cheese
  • Coffee
  • Weather
  • Hormones
Triggers are different for everyone; that is why it is important for you to keep a headache diary.
