Since there are very few tourists this year, instead of annexing the main strip where all the major businesses are in town, the town is enacting a series of regressive taxes. Here's some new doozies:
Cat tax: $25/per cat must show proof of vaccination which includes several shots not normally required by most vets.
Dog tax: $50/per dog. Ditto on shot requirements.
Internet service tax: a high tax for receiving internet service
Personal computer tax: Must confess how many PCs you have and pay taxes on them regardless of the computer's age.
More business taxes to come.
This is on top of our new state taxes! Here's some of our new state taxes:
Unemployment tax: Doubled. Now businesses with no employees and who are not making money at all (ie no money coming in at all) must pay unemployment tax on employees they don't have on money they have not made.
In fact, the business taxes are so steep and dracoian that probably a lot of small businesses are going to go out of business, because if they are a day late or have even the smallest infraction of error, major penalties will be assessed. The state is now using penalties as a major fund raising device.
Here's our problem, our state has been flooded with the unemployed family members of current residents. There are no jobs for these people. There were never jobs for these people which is why they left. Now, the state has to pay massive unemployment to all these new people who have contributed nothing to the state coffers and are now unemployed so they won't be paying anything much in either, but in the meantime need loads of social services.
One of the reasons we are moving is because the taxes are getting so enormous that we can't afford to live here anymore.

That doesn't even sound legal IMO. Very strange!
