Rigid School Dress Code Leads to Suspension of Dozens in Indiana

When 13-year-old Elijah Bell came home from school on his second day of eighth grade he gave his mother the pink warning slip he'd gotten for violating the school's dress code.

His outfit? Pants and a button-up, collared shirt. His violation? The shirt was plaid.

Re: Rigid School Dress Code Leads to Suspension of Dozens in Indiana

In 43 years of living, I have never heard of anyone being driven to sexual heights or violence by plaid. Is there some study out there about the ill effects of wearing plain? I can see some of the rest of the complaints, but plaid? What's wrong with plaid? My kids would need a whole new wardrobe if they went to that school. Not due to plaid, but almost all their stuff has flowers or butterflies or some sort of print on it.

From what I read, they didn't feel like inspecting each patterned item to see if it contained a logo or lettering so instead just banned all prints. Seems a bit over the top to me.
... and the collar bone thing? I don't own a single shirt that touches my neck because with my scar already feeling tight on my throat, I can't stand for anything to be added to it.

Most of Ally's & Drew's clothes wouldn't pass muster. That is absurd!

What's wrong with prints? That's ridiculous. I agree with getting in trouble for things being to short, or revealing to much. I wish more schools would enforce that part. I just don't understand why plaid, or print is a problem for anyone.

These people are simply being lazy in my opinion. The article says they didn't want teachers to take the time to have to inspect each article of clothing to look for infractions. Gimme a break! What does it take? 1/2 second to see if it says something?

and if it takes longer than that to find, what does it matter? No one can see it anyway!

You know those little girls in Hannah Montana shirts.... they look very dangerous to me.

Let's not forget the Jonas Bros/Camp Rock shirts (half Ally's warbrobe this year). I'm sure they are inspiring kids to turn "bad"!
