I am buying Christmas presents for my nieces (ages 14 and 10). They like crafts and have my mil who is very, very crafty to help them. Dh says I can only spend $5 per child on Christmas presents. Since their parents send nothing to my kids, it is a bargain. Dover books has a 60% off sale right now on several craft books. My question is I have found several books on jewelry making and beading and could buy a couple for each girl with the $5 limit. I also found a book on preserving, storing, arranging and drying flowers for 60 cents. I was thinking of sending them these books. I know Elaine's dd loves to craft so maybe she can help me help me out here. I also found a book on shell crafting I thought they might like. They live in Hawaii, so shells are free.
I know one of my nieces will hate whatever I send her because it will not be a teenaged male or an expensive video game, so in her case, life is hard, she'll be getting the same thing the others are. I gave up trying to figure her out or trying to please her long ago.

if your nieces are thankless.
Haley is into jewelry making and origami but I think the shell book is a neat idea based on where your nieces live.
