A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

It's hard to believe this sort of attitude is still around after all this time. I know I lot of interracial couples. Let's see how long they've been together...

My cousin J and her dh, K have been together since 1982.
My cousin S and her dh, T have been together since about 1987.
My mom's old friend L has been with her dh B since at least 1979 when my mom met them.
And of course, there is always my cousin S who has been married to E since 1978, but he is mexican so I am not sure that counts.

Over 20 years each, I guess that's his idea of not lasting...

Not sure, but can't a JoP refuse to marry anyone they don't want to marry? He didn't tell them they couldn't get married, just that he wouldn't do it.

That being said, what the HE!! was he thinking? Hard to believe that in this day and age ANYONE would even think of refusing to marry an interracial couple. What's the big deal?
