My three year old is going in for a vaccination (part two) in a few weeks. He is fine up until he sees the syringe, then it's all kicking, all screaming, all the time... until we're back in the parking lot. He gets very panicked and very scared.
Do any of you have any tips on soothing a child who's afraid of shots? We talk gently about what will happen prior to the shot (without going into gory details, or exaggerating the situation) and he listens logically at first, but he loses all sense of logic when he sees the needle come out. Naturally, I hold on to him (and try to lasso his flailing arms and legs) and soothe his cries, and just wait until it's over. Nothing else seems to come close to working.
