PARIS (AFP) – Man's best friend could be one of the environment's worst enemies, according to a new study which says the carbon pawprint of a pet dog is more than double that of a gas-guzzling sports utility vehicle.

Polluting pets: the devastating impact of man's best friend - Yahoo! News

Give me a break! Would even PETA get online with this one? I grew up on a farm and lived near near the R&D facility and factory for probably the world's finest pet foods - Science Diet. Here's a newsflash: Most pet food is made from animal by products. IE the parts people generally don't want to eat even ground up in hamburger or sausage.

Another source of pet food meat is what we called the 'dead wagon'. When a large animal dies on the farm, it has to be disposed of. It is illegal for sick or farm dead cattle or other animals to be butchered for human consumption. The dead wagon comes and picks up these dead animals at no charge to the owner. These farm deceased animals are turned into pet food.

If these animal by products and farm dead animals were not turned into pet food, they would have to go to a land fill or be left to rot in the fields - causing even more pollution than feeding them to cats and dogs.
