Took Haley to court yesterday

Back in October she and a friend got caught shop lifting at Kroger and they pressed charges. It took a while but she finally had her court date yesterday. She got off relatively easy ... especially compared to how scared I had her. She was convinced that she'd be wearing a sign that said she was a shoplifter and standing out front of the store. It was kinda funny in a not-so-funny way. The judge had both the girls wringing their hands and biting their lips while she talked about the possibility of lock-up detention and ALPHA (the local school for delinquents). They ended up with no more than a letter of appology to the store and having to complete a course of theft prevention.
I, of course, got hit with the fees and expenses of it all. I have to pay $130 just by Friday. *sigh*
I'm considering having Haley pay it off in some way ... not sure what yet though.
I love having a teenager.

I understand kids do this for the thrill of it. I hope she's learned her lesson. I would make her pay you back. How much babysitting and house cleaning will it take?

Re: Took Haley to court yesterday

I agree with Lenora... I would definitely make her work off the money. It's her fine and court fees not yours, and I think having to earn enough to pay you back will crystalize the message from the court as well.

Feeling remorse is the most important part of learning a lesson...

Hopefully she learned her lesson. I would definitely make her work it off.

Definitely make her work it off. That is the only way that she will learn.

Re: Took Haley to court yesterday

Zach racked up almost $70 in text messaging on his phone and I made him sell some of his games on ebay to pay it off plus he gave me one of his gc's from Christmas. Call me mean but I bet he won't do that again!

I would have done the same thing. Not mean at all. They have to learn personal responsibility.

I agree with her having to pay you back, as it is not your responsibility to pay her court costs.

Re: Took Haley to court yesterday

When Drew racked up $120 worth of data charges on his cell phone, I made him take darn near every penny he had in savings to pay me back. He hasn't done it since. Making her work off the charges is a good idea. Why should you pay for her mistake?

Re: Took Haley to court yesterday

Also, another point, you don't have a lot of money for this crap and the whole family is going to have to suffer for this stupidity. If she's going to do stuff that makes the whole family suffer, she should be doing a little suffering herself. I hope I didn't offend here.

No offense taken at all Lenora ... I completely agree with you. Haley (and a lot of her friends) have an entitled attitude that drives me insane. "You are my mother so it's your responsibilty to make sure I have what I want and go where I want to go". To use one of her lines ... "Whatever".

Re: Took Haley to court yesterday

I was just thinking what a hard month you said you were having and $130 is a lot of money. She just made a hard month worse. to you.
