H&M and Wal-Mart destroy and trash unsold goods

This week the New York Times reported a disheartening story about two of the largest retail chains. You see, instead of taking unsold items to sample sales or donating them to people in need, H&M and Wal-Mart have been throwing them out in giant trash bags. And in the case that someone may stumble on these bags and try to keep or re-sell the items, these companies have gone ahead and slashed up garments, cut off the sleeves of coats, and sliced holes in shoes so they are unwearable.

This is beyond wasteful! This is just corporate greed at it's absolute worst! "We couldn't sell it, so let's destroy it instead of donating it to someone who really needs it".

I knew about this. I have asked workers at different stores why they didn't just buy a display model tv or computer and was told these items are strictly accounted for and thrown away. It is not just clothes and shoes, it is everything including tvs and computers. I have wondered for a long time why they don't give these unused machines to local school districts. I wonder if this news story will change their policy.

when I worked at the mall (ages ago) it was common practice for most of the stores to do this. I worked in a home interiors shop and we would watch for the bags of clothes and pull them out. We would see what was salvagable and in our size and take it home. Most of it wasn't, but a few things would just need buttons sewn back on etc.... It is insane to throw all those things away and terribly wasteful

That is strange ... Goodwill buys truck loads of unsellable items from Walmart ... everything from electronics to toys to carparts. Wonder what it is that they are destroying and why.

It's probably different depending on your region. I know they throw away tons of unused stuff here. They have big locks and security around their trash. If there was nothing anyone would value like bathroom trash, there would be no need for locks and security.

According to the article, these 2 particular stores were only destroying clothes. What really burns me up is that there are SO many people who could use this stuff! Why the he!! would they destroy it when they could donate it and take it off their taxes?

You would think they could donate it and get a tax deduction. That is beyond wasteful when so we have so many people who could benefit from their *trash*!
