Itchy Scalp

My 8 yr old son was cursed with a dry scalp that seems to be aggravated by the fact that he also has thick, wiry hair. The dry weather has also contributed lately and he's started getting made fun of for his constant scratching at his head ... I'm sure you guys can guess what is being said.
Anyway, we plan to shave his mohawk off today (poor kid was so resistant to that idea) to help with the problem but I'm wondering if there is a shampoo that anyone has tried that really helps. We've tried your average dandruff shampoo and it doesn't seem to help much.

Re: Itchy Scalp

I used this really cheap dye that caused my head to itch badly. It took a couple of nights of this but it worked. I soaked my head in about 1/4 cup of olive oil and left it overnight. Of course, I had to wash it in the morning. It took a couple of times, but the itching did stop. It wouldn't necessarily take overnight if you have one of those hair dryers with a bonnet. You could also try heating the towel in the dryer before you put it on his head. Since I didn't want to bother with either of those things, I just wrapped my head and left the oil in overnight. I think to work it does actually have to be olive oil. It is an old Italian hair secret that I found on the web.

Re: Itchy Scalp

since I wash my hair everyday, I use moisturizing shampoo and the high power moisturizing conditioner. Since my hair is dyed, it tends to dry out really easily if I don't use the highest strength moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I use Aveeno. I know it is kind of expensive, but it is only me using it.

Re: Itchy Scalp

I get the same thing from hair dyes Lenora. Not only does it make my head really itchy but it irritates my scar (behind my right ear and down my neck) like you wouldn't believe ... I've scratched the area raw because of it before.

Re: Itchy Scalp

I think those dyes dry out your scalp as bad as your hair. I try to treat it like I would dry skin anywhere else on my body.

Re: Itchy Scalp

I don't know if you can get Head and Shoulders in the USA but it works really well for Des and Ricky, without it they have the whole itching, flaking really uncomfortable head thing going on, the silly thing is Anthony and I have the long hair and have no problem.

I don't know if there is any correlation but both Des and Ricky had excma(sp?) as infants.

Re: Itchy Scalp

You can try T-Gel shampoo if nothing else works. I hesitate to say just go get it because 1. It costs a fortune and 2. It stinks to high heaven.

Lenora's olive oil treatment will work - so will plain old mayo (NOT miracle whip). You can also try going to a beauty supply place and seeing what they have available. There are some really good super conditioners you can only get at places like that or salons (but the salons charge an arm & an leg for them).

Re: Itchy Scalp

I use Tee Tree oil shampoo. I have a very dry itchy, flaky scalp. I have to wash my hair everyday. It doesn't matter if I use hairspray and stuff or not, my scalp drives me insane if I don't wash it.

Re: Itchy Scalp

I have a bottle of tea tree oil and I add a little to my shampoo as needed. Tea tree shampoos are great (LOVE Paul Mitchell) but it tends to strip hair color out. Adding the oil to the shampoo works great for me.
Hair dye always irritates my scalp, some times more than others, but when its real bad, I dab some of the plain tea tree oil on the real dry spots and let it sit for a little bit before washing it out.

Re: Itchy Scalp

Thanks Jen ~ I think I'm going to pick up some tea tree oil next payday. My mom has always sworn by the stuff (not for itchy scalp spec. but pretty much for any skin irritation).
