Need to purge...

Thread Starter
Our apartment is over-flowing with our "stuff". Part of the problem is that the apartment is too small for the amount of people we have living here but I can't deny that I buy too much. Maybe I over compensate because I didn't have a lot growing up or maybe I'm just addicted to shopping Whatever the problem is, I have to get it under control. We could possibly be moving in the summer and I don't want to take all the junk with me.
So, my question is, how do you disconnect from an item to part with it? I'll start the process and then get stuck on "Gracie looked really cute in that the one time she wore it" or "Zach loved that toy when he first got it" or even "That cost so much money". I have a serious problem with getting rid of stuff and I'm certain that I'm passing it on to my kids. If I include them in the process, I'm afraid we won't get rid of anything.
*sigh*

Re: Need to purge...

I was surprised what my kids were willing to part with and what they weren't when we let them in on the process. I thought for sure they would fight me tooth and nail, but they didn't. If there is even the slightest bit of good left in an item even if it means Goodwill will be selling it to a rag company, I give my old stuff to charity. I have had to give a lot of my craft supplies away to the VA, but it helped knowing that a veteran (probably with physical or mental problems) would be improving their lives using my craft supplies. I really think about who I give things to and pick the person or organization where it could do the most good. I think that helps me let go of things.

Re: Need to purge...

Elaine... I will say honestly what can help motivate me is watching either clean sweep or hoarders. Then when I start going through stuff trying to decide what to keep and remind myself I don't want to be like them.

As for the kids stuff, the way I have handled that is to remind them that we are going to have a yard sale, and any of their things that sell they get half of the funds. Also we are going to use the funds from the yard sale for something fun (not sure what yet).

Remind yourself that even though Gracie looked cute in it once, someone else could actually use it now. The same thing with the toys, if they no longer play with it, they aren't getting any joy from it so let someone else enjoy it.

Re: Need to purge...

Both ladies have great ideas. Yard Sale is my motivation...MONEY MONEY MONEY. Even if it's pennies on the dollar I feel as though as least I got something for it.

Re: Need to purge...

Everyone has great advice for you
When it comes to my kids it's the clothes we have an over abundance of more then anything. I have no problem getting rid of their toys or any of my clothes and household items. What I have done for the kiddos is only keep one or two outfits from when they were babies that were especially special to me. All the rest I sell or give away. (or ebay!LOL!). I give a TON of the girl's clothes to my niece which makes it soooo much easier because I get to see her wearing the clothes all the time.
If I worked at GW my house would be overflowing with stuff too girlfriend! LOL Good luck!
