Overweight or Borderline kids...

Tessa is in that awkward girl phase. She has always looked a little chunky, but she is now bordering on overweight.

We are working on increasing her activity level, and decreasing her portion sizes. She's a carb girl... loves carbs, and i have to remind her that she can't have huge portions of that to fill her up. She needs to have extra veggies and fruit.

Its hard though, because I don't want her obsessing about her size and what she eats, but I do need her to pay attention to what she is putting in her mouth so she doesn't end up like me.

Anyone else going through this???

Re: Overweight or Borderline kids...

I haven't had to go through it. However, many family members and their children are extremely obese and I beg and plea all day long to no end.

Obsessing about what your eating is better than obsessing about the image. I believe we can instill good eating habits and have it be obsessive without distorting the self image. It's important to remember to seperate image from eating. Good luck....

Not so far, my dds are on the too small size. I am always trying to get them to eat. One day, things may catch up with them. I hope not because as bad as being a fat grown up is, being a fat kid is worse. Good luck, Heather.

Yes, Devon is borderline. I've added in treadmill exercise. He eats the same as the other kids but for some reason is bigger. I've been teaching them all healthy eating habits. I told him to increase exercise, and think about weather or not he is hungry before he has a snack, or something bad for him.

I have this problem with Drew, but only in recent years. As a kid, he was underweight. It's hard to monitor what he eats since he is a teen and away from home so much. But at home, he does eat healthy (since I hid or lock up any junk food! LOL!).

YES! Emily just went to the doctor for her 7 year check up on Friday, and her pediatrician said something to Kyle about Emily's weight. She is borderline overweight, and it does concern me because there has to be a balance between helping her make good choices and not making her obsess about her looks and her weight.

Re: Overweight or Borderline kids...

We have the same problem with Toriana. I try not to make a huge deal about it because I also hate to instill an eating disorder later. We are ALL trying to watch what we eat. Adam and I need it also. I've only been buying healthier stuff and started cooking less. I've always been afraid that I won't cook enough and then we have a ton of leftovers and eat seconds. We are also joining the gym again. She cannot be in the workout room but can walk on the track and will be able to swim a couple days a week. Hopefully that helps.

Nice to know I'm not alone! Most of my RL friends have the same problem you do Lenora, so it makes it even a little harder for Tessa I think.
and avoiding a later eating disorder is exactly the issue... So far so good.

Re: Overweight or Borderline kids...

My oldest daughter, I always though was a bit "chunky" when she was pre teen, young teen.
A new one for me as I am so skinny, lol and so were my boys.
I think it all works out though, once they become interested in boys, and their looks".
My daughter still isn't what I would call slim, by no means. She is almost 19 now, a new mother too. She is short, about 5 5 and aboout 125. I think she looks great and so does she.
I have always been " at" Shauna, for the way she eats, though.
I do think though there is a line, and if a pre teen is "chunky" especially a girl, they need to be shown by a parent to "curb" their eating, and taught better eating habits.
