DIY or Hire a professional?

When it comes to home improvements what type of person are you? (or is DH) Do you like to tackle the job yourself or do you prefer to have a professional come in and do the work?

There are certain things that I'm perfectly fine with doing by myself ... patching and painting walls is fairly simple and I'd probably be okay with a few "installation" type things. When it comes to actual building or anything electrical though, I want a professional to come in and do it.
Chad is oposite, he doesn't think there is any job that he can't do ... It doesn't matter if he's never done it before, he thinks all it takes is a little research. We want to add a room in the attic, and he is certain that he can handle himself. Scares me...

Elaine, I am like you. There are some small things that I don't mind doing myself, as long as it's nothing major, I'll give it a try. Kyle is like Chad and pretty much will take on any job he can. There are times when it scares me too!

Re: DIY or Hire a professional?

It has always scared me when a man takes control of something he's knows nothing about. The worst time was the water pressure valve for the entire house broke and we had just moved in. Ex-hubby knew nothing about pressure valves. I left the house thinking I would come back to a flooded mess! He even had to sotter (sp) it together, did a good job but I was scared!

I agree with you somethings should be left to professionals!

Re: DIY or Hire a professional?

Plumbing is one thing and electrical wiring is another. Since my dh has an associates degree in electronics technology and 20 years experience, I would trust him to do electrical work. The funny thing is, although, he knows tons about electrical wiring, he would not do anything major because he does not know the current codes. He would hire a professional to wire an entire room. My dh can fix about anything, but if he had the money, he would hire someone because he is so tired of fixing stuff.

Anything plumbing, I get Bill to do (he used to be a plumber). Anything electrical, I get Rick's BIL to do. He's been an electrician for over 30 years. No way would I try either of those things myself, nor would I let Rick. There are some things you really do need a pro for.

Especially things that can get you killed if they don't work.
