Homeschooling: German Family Gets Political Asylum in U.S.

The Romeikes are not your typical asylum seekers. They did not come to the U.S. to flee war or despotism in their native land. No, these music teachers left Germany because they didn't like what their children were learning in public school - and because homeschooling is illegal there.

I hope we grant asylum to this family. We granted asylum to that Nazi prison guard who killed or assisted in killing thousands of Jews in WWII. He lived safe and happy here for many years while we protected him from being deported for the many war crimes he committed (and had many witnesses to). Only recently did he have to go back. While, I do not personally agree with these people's religious beliefs, I don't believe they should be sent to jail or have their kids taken away because of their beliefs. Although, their beliefs are not in line with German laws, they are in line with our beliefs and laws. If we are going to actually protect Nazis and big time losers (as we have many times), we should protect these people too.

We knew of some Missionaries who moved every 4 months, they didn't want to enroll their children in school and would lose their Visa if the government realized that their children were not in school. Homeschooling is illegal their. I don't know though. German schooling seemed much better to us then what our children were getting. Their days were much shorter and they specialized for careers at an earlier age.

I just don't see giving asylum to Nazis and the Marcos (for those of us old timers who remember those tyrants) and not these people. We gave the Shah of Iran asylum for years. Why not these people? They seem like they won't cause any trouble. Germany seems like a popular place to live. I guess I don't understand why they want these people back so badly. We don't seem to go after everyone who doesn't want to live here. Frankly, they are giving up a lot of benefits to live here, so more power to them, if this is what they want to do.

I hope they get asylum, too. I can't believe these so called forward thinking countries have banned homeschooling! How do they think it used to be done?
