Lesbian teen in prom flap sues, returns to school

JACKSON, Miss. – Constance McMillen didn't believe her Mississippi school district would really call off her senior prom rather than allow her to show up with her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo. On Thursday, a day after the Itawamba County school board did just that, the 18-year-old lesbian high school senior reluctantly returned to campus to some unfriendly looks, she said.

I am curious as to what everyone thinks of this. Not the fact that she is a lesbian, but that the school cancelled the prom rather than deal with the problem! Were they right or wrong?

It's not a problem, it's none of their = government/school district business. We all put our pants on the same way! LOL...

It's not fair to punish the whole school because some right wing school district in the south is still living in days of slavery perhaps! To think that if this was one of our children, put yourself in the parents/child shoes. You would love them and clearly they seem like good kids wanting to go to prom and be with their peers whom are being taught to discriminate against them! Absurd! JMO!!!

Ditto what Karen said. Who cares what she wears as long as it if formal? It seems like punishing someone for something about herself she can't change like forbidding her from going to the prom because of her nose. Also, it was cruel to single her out and make the whole school hate her.

NOT taking the side of the school at all, I have to say that I find what this girl/couple did to be very selfish. Fight for what you believe in but not at the expense of others.

I don't like the whole opposite sex date rule. What if you aren't gay, but don't have a date? Does this mean you can't go with your girlfriends? Or are you barred from the prom if you don't have a date? What if girls want to get their pics taken together? Is everyone going to assume they are gay? In my ancient day, girls often went in groups together to the prom or had their pics taken together. And nobody thought anything of it. I am guessing this rule applies to two males who want to go to the prom together as well.

I didn't realize that we were still in a time that a lesbian (or gay) couple couldn't attend a prom as a couple. It is and as far as I know, always has been a pretty common thing for a girl to take another female to the prom when she doesn't have a date.

I still think it was a pretty unfair and selfish thing to do, to pursue her lawsuit even after the threat that prom would be canceled.

Re: Lesbian teen in prom flap sues, returns to school

In my day, it was a pretty common thing for girls to wear slacks or even tuxes and guys not to wear tuxedos. Science has proved over and over that homosexuality is genetically determined. It is not a choice. It is not something this girl can easily change like the color of her hair. It's who she is. It's just sad that something that would be nothing 25+ years ago is a huge deal now. Of course, it is only a huge deal at this school. At other schools across the country, it could be nothing. There may be gays wearing whatever this year and attending with their preferred date. I think it would be an even bigger deal if it were a guy wanting to wear a dress.

Why are they making such a huge deal out of this? Obviously, this topic comes up every year at many schools all over the country and it is not a huge deal. It wasn't a big deal when I was a senior 27 years ago.
