How much soap should I put in my washing machine and dishwasher?

Do I need to do more for my dryer than clean that little pull–out lint catcher?

I know I use a little too much soap in the laundry, but I figure I have someone who pees her pants a lot at my house. I feel like I get some extra nasty stuff in my washer. I want to be sure it's clean.

I use about half of what is recommended in the washer and dishwasher and they both work just fine. Why use more than you need to?
