US Census ~ Good? Bad? Indifferent?

I've been hearing all these opinions on the census ... mostly from my mother who is die hard set against it but I can't seem to see what the big deal is. I guess you could say I'm indifferent. I don't really see how answering the census can change anything but I do it because I don't see what the big deal against doing it is. The majority of their questions can be dug up legally in some way or another and I'd rather just fill the thing out than have them waste their manpower and time having someone snooping around for my info.
Sure they ask a few questions that seem unnecessary and it seems to me that they waste a lot of money with their ridiculous mailings ... why do I need to be mailed a notice that my census is coming? I check my mail every day ... I'll see it when it gets here.
What is your opinion? Do you fill out your census?

I feel the same way as you. Mine came and I filled it out same day and mailed it back the next day.

Re: US Census ~ Good? Bad? Indifferent?

I have a few issues, I don't want to specify my birthdate and I don't want to specify my childrens names. I'm looking to not giving this information and what happens if I don't provide those 2 pieces of information. From my children's perspective, they're not old enough to vote and won't be by the next census either therefore their information is moot. From a head count and culture they still get counted.

It's no big deal. They already have the names and birth dates who has a social security number or a passport anyway. There have been censuses for hundreds - maybe even thousands of years. The census is the focal point of of one of the most important bible stories - that's how old it is.

Re: US Census ~ Good? Bad? Indifferent?

It bothers me. I have no problem with a count. But why do they need to know if my child is adopted or biological? And half of the races they had as options have never been known to me as races. It's ridiculous. I marked our house member count and the gender of each person. That's it. Whether or not I am biologically related to my children has nothing to do with how many representatives we have in the House or whether or not my area gets fed funding.

What's the big deal? This is all info they already have and it is required by law to give it. The census just makes it easier for them - having all the info in one central place.

I am fairly indifferent, although we tell them that two adults and one child live in our house and that's all they need to know.

Do you know why we have a census? It's actually required by the Constitution to determine our representation in the House of Representatives and to determine where funding goes from the Federal Government, as it is based on population. How many electoral college votes your state receives in the Presidential election.

This is in Article I Section 2 of the Constitution.

Yes, for a HEAD COUNT. I have no problem with that and I did that and mailed it in. It is not in the Constitution that they know the racial make up of my family or whether or not they are blood related, or when my house was built and if I own or rent. The # of people designates representation, not ethnicity. They ask that so they can work out ridiculous redistricting. (both sides of the aisle...)

What in the world would they need to know race for in a census? I don't remember them asking if my kids were biologically mine or not. How could that possibly be of any interest to them? Let alone any of their business? They are my kids. Period! Dana, I don't blame you a bit.
