Judge Hears Lesbian Teen's Suit to Force Prom

Here's the information the school has not been saying:

Quote:
Schools Superintendent Teresa McNeece and school board Chairman Eddie Hood testified that they had discussed not sponsoring the prom even before McMillen challenged a rule that prohibits same-sex dates. They said they had concerns about liability problems, including possible use of alcohol and drugs at a school-sponsored event.

Re: Judge Hears Lesbian Teen's Suit to Force Prom

If the primary reason to cancel the prom was because their students are out of control/can't abstain for one night from drugs and alcohol, why blame the lesbian? If it is true that there are a number of students causing this problem, then quit blaming the one. Why doesn't the principal set the school straight if this is the main reason behind canceling the prom? How are the parents who are organizing the alternate prom going to avoid the same problems and liability the school had with drugs and alcohol? If the school couldn't stop teens from using illegal products (alcohol is illegal for teens), then how are you going to do it?

I have a feeling these "concerns" didn't amount to much until they needed some excuses to fall back on.
For ALL of the students' sake, I hope they continue with plans for a prom.

You're probably right, Elaine. If they had that serious of a problem with drugs and alcohol, why weren't they bringing in counselors and doing something about it? I can believe the principal was primarily concerned with the drug/alcohol problem, because he seems pretty upset to be called a bigot and he's actually with them everyday and knows what they are up to. Now they have exposed their students' dirty laundry, they do need to address the drug/alcohol problem.

I hope they do reschedule the prom for all the students, but I do think they need to enlist extra chaperons this year - not only for Constance's and her girlfriend's safety, but also for the well being of all the students. As a parent, if I were suddenly hearing for the first time about these drug/alcohol problems, I would want to be there for my own child.

Cowards! Won't admit they made a mistake. Trying to cover it up.

OK I live 30 mins from this I actually saw this girl when my daughter played her schools softball team and she was bragging to some friends at shell that she did this for attention. I know parents of kids at this school and they DID already before she was going to bring her GF to the prom have plans to cancel it this was stated to the parents at a meeting LONG before this girl started all this. The news doesn't have a clue. The parents were already setting up before this court thing ever happened to have a prom elsewhere.

Re: Judge Hears Lesbian Teen's Suit to Force Prom

They had the opportunity to totally derail her by allowing her to take her date to the prom and wear the clothes of her choice. I heard several teenagers who are not gay saying they were going to do the same thing here. However, since the school board allowed everyone to take whom they liked and wear what they liked and didn't make a big deal out of it, this little game did not make the national or even the local news. Apparently, most of the student body is "going gay" for the prom.

I feel for you if the drug and alcohol problems are that bad in your area. I also feel for the seven students who were not invited to the private prom. I am talking the students who did nothing to cause the prom to be called off or bring the media to the area. They sure know where they stand socially at that school. I am glad for Constance and these seven other students that the school year is almost over and they can put all all of this behind them.
