Pop-Ed: Why Kate Gosselin Might As Well Cash In on the Fame

I thought this was an interesting article on (even more) of the Gosselin controversy. It not only covers the cost of raising 8 kids and the probabilities of (not) being able to do it on a nurse's salary but also an interesting comparison to other "absent parents".
I especially thought this last paragraph was interesting and gave me something to think about...

So everyone who says that Kate is neglecting her kids, you might be right. I'm sure even Kate would want to be home more than she is now. But step back from the situation for a second and realize that at this point, she may not have any choice. Once you open the door of fame, it's hard to close it again.

Re: Pop-Ed: Why Kate Gosselin Might As Well Cash In on the Fame

I just wish the whole "reality" show thing would go away. IMO, it's fame for nothing. None of these people have really done anything noteworthy other than become famous for just living their everyday lives. I swear if someone cured cancer, AIDS, or the common cold, that person would be on tv for like two seconds and then everyone would totally forget them. Our country needs to get back to honoring actual achievement and excellence. Even actors are better than reality show stars. Most actors have college degrees. They have a skill they have taken years honing. They have gone through the wringer and heartbreak of the Hollywood. Hollywood chews a lot of people up and spits them out. Only a few actually make it. What is wrong with us that we think fame should be easy to achieve?

As for Jon and Kate, who cares about them? DWTS should have kept Buzz Aldrian. Now, there's a real hero.

I think everyone is really quick to judge Kate Gosselin. I never watched her show, but the thing is lots of true Hollywood stars exploit their kids, too, and let's face it, they were already rich before they had their kids, so why are they allowing the paparazzi to photograph their kids? It's their motives I question much more than Kate's. I don't blame her for doing what she has to in order to make as much money as she can to provide support and higher education for her kids. If she benefits from the money, too, good for her.

I have to agree with you Tammy ... people in general are way too quick to judge Kate Gosselin. I was actually proud of her for doing DWTS ... she had to know she would get some harsh criticism for it (and she HAD to know she was an awful dancer) ... I think it's part of her process of figuring out who she is since the divorce and letting the media (and the public) know they can't knock her down.

I also agree with you Lenora, that reality TV (other than the competition type shows that I enjoy) tend to celebrate people for being idiots or drama queens rather than for having any talent.

Actually, I don't care about her. Be on tv. Don't be on tv. I just wish people had more respect for those who actually do something above and beyond the average.

Tammy, I agree. Actors and politicians shouldn't exploit their kids either. And politicians who make sure their kids are there for every photo op just so they can get elected are just as bad.

I hate reality shows in general. I just hate watching people makes fools of themselves. As for Kate, no one really knows what she is going thru. While I can't say I actually admire her, if she's doing what she has to for her kids, then more power to her! It's more than their father has done.
