Letting your little ones "help"

Are your preschoolers interested in helping you with tasks around the house? What do they enjoy doing?

I am easily frustrated when Gracie wants to help me around the house ... which is VERY often. She's constantly wanting to help with the dishes, folding laundry, and cooking. She's honestly more of a distraction and obstacle when it comes to things like that though and I often tell her no ... and feel guilty about it afterwards. Today I let her help me with the dishes and she got to put the spices in her noodles and stir them up ... it wasn't that bad but then again, she is the only one home today.

I think it can be a special thing and not something you do everyday. I often let Cara vacuum and seldom let her help with the dishes. She makes a big mess and I spend longer cleaning up her mess than I would just washing the dishes alone. She likes to mop, so once or twice a week, I let her mop the kitchen floor after I have already mopped it. I wish they both liked picking up their dang room as much as they like pestering me when I'm trying to do something.

Re: Letting your little ones "help"

Katie is my biggest helper, she does the dishes (what she can't put away she leaves on the counter) SHe sweeps, mops (and I have them MOP BEFORE I mop )

Peyton likes to toss laundry down the shoot. So thats her main job.

When it comes to kitchen cooking help I often shoo them out. Its really hard to let them help cause if I let ONE help then I have 2 more who want to help and I don't often have jobs they are all capable of doing. When I can I let them. The other night I let Katie make meatloaf (I put the ingrediants on teh counter and she combined them and made the mini loafs.) and while she did that Alyssa pealed potatoes.

I only let them help in the kitchen when we have had a GOOD day

Re: Letting your little ones "help"

Ally still like to help, mostly in the kitchen. While she isn't crazy about doing dishes, she likes to cook, do I'm trying to encourage that. But she has always been a helper. It's hard for me to not just do it myself. She needs to feel helpful, buit I just want to get it done. And if she doesn't do it the way I like, then she gets her feelings hurt if I go back and re-do something. So we mostly stick to cooking where she can mix stuff up, stir the pot, etc.

Re: Letting your little ones "help"

My two boys love helping as well, which I agree can be hinderance particularly when your in a hurry! But I guess what are chores to us are great new experiences to them, so I do try to be a bit patient when the little ones want to help.
