Frugal summer fun?

Just wondering what free/cheap summer ideas people have. It seems near impossible to keep the kids entertained during the summer months on a budget.

Re: Frugal summer fun?

I have several things I would like to do, but dh keeps shooting them down. If you had a yard, it would be easier. Then they could play in the sprinkler, throw a frisbee, etc. I am having a hard time thinking up apartment summer fun ideas, too.

Re: Frugal summer fun?

Our library has activities throughout the summer, two to three times a week. Magic shows, story time, movie time, puppet shows, and yesterday they had Bippo the Hippo give a performance on dental hygiene. It's all free. My Dad takes them to almost everything they want to go to. (He is retired and babysits for me while I'm at work.)

Re: Frugal summer fun?

We go to the community pool, it's free and I know in some areas where it's not you can do a one time fee. Some movie theaters offer free kids movies in the summer, check out the museums nearby to see if any of them have a free or reduced night (we are going to the Magic House in St. Louis tonight because it's free). PLaygrounds early in the day, the library like Heather said... Hmmm, do you have a lake nearby?

Someone told me about this yesterday. THere isn't a place close to me, but Ohio has plenty of places listed. I don't know if it is worth the money or not, but thought I would tell you about it anyway.

We've done this 2x already. My girls love it and Stu has a blast too (although 2 games and he's way past done) we got shoe passes (not all alleys have them) and the family pass so for about $100 all of us bowl anytime we want (1x a day during the hours) all summer. The only out of pocket we've been spending is the $5 for a pitcher of soda.

Re: Frugal summer fun?

My kids are doing the library's summer reading program with their sitter Tia ... Tuesday is their library day. They seem to enjoy it and it's close enough for them to walk.
I also found out today that the pool "might" finally be opening this weekend ... fingers crossed!

Re: Frugal summer fun?

Oh and I checked out the kids bowl free link ... The two closets lanes aren't participating but there is one about 45 mins away ... definitely something we could do one day.

Re: Frugal summer fun?

I posted the free movies/theatre link in the Sales or Freebies section. They seem to have quite a few theatres around the country.
