This weekend we rented Soldiers and Saintswhich is a WWII movie. First, of all, this movie proposed to be a true story. It is not. It is almost entirely fiction. Elements of the movie are taken from actual events, but the main storyline is entirely made up. The men and women in the movie are fictional characters.
As an historian, but not one with an emphasis in military history, I just felt like a lot of things were off and it turned out I was right. One of the main characters was a missionary in Berlin before the war. I kind of wondered about that because Germany was a Christian country before the war, so why would they need missionaries? I thought maybe this character was Mormon, but at no point in the movie did it expressly say he was a Mormon and dh totally missed this until I told him after we watched the movie.
Feeling things were just not right, I investigated this movie and quickly found out it was produced by Excel Entertainment Group, a production company entirely dedicated to producing films to promote the Mormon religion. It did not succeed in this goal as I feel unless a person is familiar with the Later Day Saints faith, cues are missed.
However, I felt that people should know before watching a movie by Excel Entertainment, that they are watching a film targeted for the Mormon audience with the purpose of converting people to Mormonism. If you are totally opposed to this, movies produced by this company many not be for you. As a vehicle to sway me from my atheism (clearly one of the main targets for conversion), Soldiers and Saints completely failed. Neither dh and I were swayed from our lack of faith.
It had no impact on our lack O'faith at all. However, I believe people should know what they are getting when they watch a movie, so I thought I would give the heads up on this production company. It was a pretty good movie, btw. I wouldn't watch it twice though.
