Inattentive ADD - medications, advice, etc

Been a long time since I have been on BU, hope this is the right place to post this.

I need some advice about Inattentive ADD treatments, etc. Brandon has been diagnosed this by his dr. We have a consultation on the 15th of July and want to know my options before we go in.

I really do not want him on ritalin or adderal. Have never heard good things, too many risks associated etc.

Has anyone tried any of the so-called homeopathic treatments such as Attend, Listerol, Memorin, etc? What was your experience?

Did you change diet?

Any advice, suggestions, stories are appreciated. I want Brandon to get the help he needs, but don't want to hurt him in the process. I don't want him to be a zombie, or have mood swings, loss of appetite, etc.

I;m no help, but I will tell you my experience. Aaron has ADHD and is on Ritalin. It's a life saver FOR HIM. You do what you are comfortable with. He is skinny due to the meds, a full 10 lbs less than his twin brother. One thing, non med we have done is cut out sugar and that has actually really helped. His body just overreacts to sugar and now that he gets sugar free treats instead (if anything), he is much more in control. Keep us posted, we also went through 4-5 different meds and doses before we found the right combo for him. GL!

My four oldest are ADHD, Duncan and Logan are on Focalin XR, it has been wonderful for them. We tried Adderal, Vyvanse and another one or two for Duncan. Ian is on Vyvanse and Kyan isn't on anything. Didn't do a lot with their diet, but their medication works well. We did have to go through a few to find the right ones though. Some lost appetite, some made them tired or just didn't work. None of them made my boys zombies, thank Heavens, but.. some do. Good luck,

Re: Inattentive ADD - medications, advice, etc

Every kid is different and will respond to different medications differently. There is just no way to tell unbti they take them.

Both of my kids have ADHD. Ally is hyperactive, but Drew is Inattentive type - severely inattentive. We went thru darn near every med they have at one point or another. The only one tha had NO affect on his appetite was Stratera. the problem with this one is that it is not nearly as strong as some of the others as it is only a 12 hour pill - which means it starts wearing off between 8 and 9 hours. This means homework time is a real booger! They started him on concerta, went to Strattera, then Metadate. We tried adderall, but he had a severe reaction - developed a tic - so we couldn't even try ritalin.

Ritalin today is NOT what it was even 5 years ago. I would still try the others first but don't discount it out of hand. It works extremely well for some kids.

Ally has taken Vyvanse (it made her sick to her stomach) and the patch (she ended up allergic to adhesive) and both worked extremely well, even though she is even worse off than Drew. We ended up putting her on Concerta (the first one Drew ever took), even tho it is an older medication. But because it is a controlled substance, that means you must get a written Rx every month. PITA, but worth it in her case.

Both of mine are/were on maximum doses no matter what med they ended up on. Drew finally quit taking them about 3 years ago because they all just quit working for him when puberty hit (not uncommon).

Do some research and listen to what the ped has to say. You may have to try a few to find the right one at the right dose. Good luck!

Re: Inattentive ADD - medications, advice, etc

Thanks everyone! We had our meeting with the Ped. I was very happy when he said he wants to send Brandon to a Psychologist for further testing, to confirm his thought that Brandon is Inattentive ADD based on the Vanderbilt testing the teacher and I filled out. He said mine clearly had some parental bias in it though.... Anyway for the most part the teacher and I were pretty much consistent in our answers. He says based on that he is 70/30% convinced that the diagnosis will stick, but wants to rule out any learning disabilities/just plain child stubborness also. That made me feel so much better. Now the problem is the doctor he recommended is not covered on our insurance and we can not afford the $500 for testing. So I got a list of those who are covered and left a couple messages on Friday. Will start again this morning. School starts in 3 weeks and we need to get this going before then. So we shall see. He said the medication they would try first would probably be Concerta. I don't have a problem with him being on the medication as long as I know he honestly has the condition.
