The School Supply list from He!!

Haley went to freshmen orientation last night and brought home her schedule and supply lists.

Get a load of this ...

5 2" Binders
24 Dividers
12 packages of 100 index cards
3 prong folder with pockets
College ruled paper
Pencils
Blue Pens
Black Pens
Highlighters
Dry Erase Markers
Colored pencils
TI-84 Graphing Calculator (OMG these things are expensive!)
2 Bookcovers
Ruler
Graph Paper

Someone told me recently that supply lists get smaller as they enter HighSchool ... I think she lied.

Re: The School Supply list from He!!

I can understand most of the list, but why does she need dry erase markers? A lot of this seems like it is for math class.

Re: The School Supply list from He!!

Oh yea, I'm pretty sure most of it is necessary stuff ... a lot of those index cards are for Spanish flash cards, Every class requires a separate binder, and her Science and Math require a lot of the same things ... calc., ruler, graph paper, etc. It just is a lot more than I bargained for buying. *sigh*
I should have known better...

Re: The School Supply list from He!!

I don't get Drew's list until this Thursday and he starts school next Monday! I am dreading having to scramble to get his supplies together on such short notice. As far as the calculator goes, I wouldn't buy it until you HAVE to. Personally, alot of parents around here have been complaining lately about the costs of supplies, even for elementary school. Last year I spent over $100 just on Drew's supplies. No way I can afford that this year.

Luckily, I have ALOT of left over supplies from last year I can use for both of them for the basics (pens, pencils, notebook paper, etc). It's the speciality items I have trouble with. Someone tell me why a 4th grader NEEDS a $20 divider thingy? She not getting it. They are stipulating it has to be a certain kind, but I'm sorry, it's just NOT gonna happen!

I have already contacted both schools to see if we can get some help with the more expensive supplies. I just don't have the money this year to spend almost $200 for school supplies for 2 kids! I know I live in an expensive school district, but this is crazy!

Re: The School Supply list from He!!

Oh, the dry erase markers (if it is like our schools) go straight to the teachers. The kids don't even use them. I refused to buy them for Drew last year and told them why. I'm sorry the schools are making the teachers buy their own supplies, but I can't afford to supply my kids and the teachers. And it's mostly for the math teachers, but alot of other teachers/classrooms now use dry erase boards instead of chalkboards. I am supposed to buy chalk for Ally for her teacher. Another thing I won't buy. The teachers HATE that I write her name on every single individual supply I send in. If I don't, then her supplies get used by the teachers and other students. Then they expect me to re-supply her again in January. Not gonna happen. Can't afford it.

Re: The School Supply list from He!!

ouch... Elaine, let me check which scientific calc I have here before you buy one. I have several and Tessa won't need one for several years and then they will be too out of date. I can mail you one if it's the right type (Have to find the box they are in )

Re: The School Supply list from He!!

Yeah, I mentioned this post while talking to Rick on the phone and Drew told me that his friends informed him he has to have some kind of calculator, and it ain't cheap. Luckily, we think Rick can get one at the VA Canteen (tax free) and put it on his account (they take it out of his paycheck before taxes). Why do they have to have a calculator that costs almost $100 in 9th grade? Insane!

Re: The School Supply list from He!!

We have been pretty fortunate with school supply lists thus far. The lists for the traditional supplies are usually on sale at Wal-Mart. I spent maybe $30 for both. Now, the stuff that we have to buy from the school is another story! Workbooks alone were an even $100 ($50 for each of them) plus each of them got a "spirit t-shirt", which is optional, but they get to wear them once a week to school as a reward if they bring in a food item for the food bank. So workbooks, traditional supplies, and spirit shirts for both cost $150.

Re: The School Supply list from He!!

The calculator has to be a TI-83 or higher ... I priced them at Walmart and they start at $80. :yikes:

Re: The School Supply list from He!!

Yeah, that sounds like the one they are telling Drew to get. Rick prioced them at the VA starting at $70, so bit cheaper than yours, but not much. Why do freshman need these? It's not like they are doing higher math, like calculus!
