How much should I spend?

So I just got invited to a baby shower. She is an old friend who I don't really talk with that much. Money is tight right now and I was wondering how much should I spend on a baby gift? I found some really cute gifts on this website for under 30 dollars. Do you think that would be good?

Thanks in advance!

Re: How much should I spend?

Only twice in my life have I spent more than $20 on a baby shower gift and each of those two times it was someone pretty close to me. I typically stick to something simple ... a pack of sz. 1 diapers (if I know the brand they prefer), a nice baby blanket, or socks & onesies. More often than not, while those gift sets look cute in the packaging or seem to come with "everything you need", they won't be practical and won't be used.

I agree. Socks and onies are things you need a lot of.

I find that GC's to places like Walmart are always handy too. That way they can get whatever they need.

I would go with the 20 dollar range if they are not a "close" friend, and if a "close" friend i would go with the $30+ range. I personally love to buy clothes for showers just because i love shopping for baby clothes online.

I have the theory that a not close friend gets a gift card, and, for a close friend, 20-30 dollars.  However, for that close friend, I go through all of my baby stuff and decide what I did not know I needed, and now I cannot live without.  That way, my rather inexpensive gift turns out to be extremely useful.  Also, you can kind of tell from the invitation whether the shower has higher standards or not.  I kind of use this as a judge of what kind of value of gift to give.
