Baby Shower Themes

I thought that we could all think of the different themes you can use for baby showers and post them here. I'll start:

Child's Library

Invite each guest to bring a children's book or series of books that meant a lot to them in their own childhood or while raising their children. It provides the new mother with a ready-made library, and is especially nice when you are having the shower before knowing the sex of the baby.

You could all chip in to give her a nice set of book ends or bookshelf to house them all in!

It's A Girl OR Think Pink

When I had my first baby the one thing we didn't get enough of was burp cloths. So the shower I gave recently was for a friend having a girl. I strung up a clothesline where guests would mingle and had cloth diapers monogrammed (one letter per diaper) to spell out "ITS A GIRL" and hung them on the clothesline. All the food and decorations, wrapping paper and even a bag of gifts were all pink and thanks to the dollar store, everyone went home with a cute white and pink ceramic basket filled with pink dinner mint type candies. Not only did the diapers make a unique decoration, but she went home with 8 burp cloths!

Frozen Casserole Party

Frozen Casserole Party

It sounds a little different, but instead of gifts, each guest brings a frozen casserole or dinner that the parents-to-be can REALLY appreciate after baby is here.

This is a wonderful shower for a 2nd or 3rd or more time around mom. Along with the casserole, each guest writes down the recipe.

Rubber Ducky

Rubber Ducky decorations are easy and colorful and sold everywhere. Build the theme on duckies, bubbles and baths.

Centerpieces- float a duckie in a glass pedestal bowl filled with California Crystals which look like bubbles. A drop of blue food coloring adds zing. Attach a balloon for height. Surround the base with yellow curling ribbon frills. (California Crystals are found at candle stores or wedding supply stores, and often used for floating candle arrangements. If you can't find them, water with a drop of blue food coloring will work, too)

Gift table -Fill a baby bathtub with ducky-themed gifts for the focal point on the gift table. Use white netting inside to soften the look and fill in between items. Cover with shrink wrap for a professional look. Top with yellow curling ribbon.

Favors- fill small plastic bags with blue raffia "water" and ducky-shaped soaps (Linens & Things). Tie off with curling ribbon. Stand upright on each place setting.

Punch bowl- float duckies on punch bowl. Make the punch blue if you're brave enough (use blue raspberry fruit juice and 7-Up)

Door prize - gift basket of bubble bath, lotion etc.;

Add a ducky and rewrap in yellow cellophane.

Prizes for games - wrap in yellow and orange tissue. Fill galvanized wash tub with round light blue balloons (blown up very small to look like bubbles). Arrange gifts on the "bubbles." Decorate the handles with more yellow curling riboon. Keep the bath theme for prizes- pretty soaps, bath beads, hand towels, etc.

Plates, napkins, cups- use bright yellow with orange accents.

Whine and Cheez

My best friend up with a "whine and cheez" baby shower. The invites had 2 pictures of babies, one whining and one smiling. She asked each guest of this co-ed party to bring their favorite wine (sparkling cider works well for those who don't drink) and/or favorite cheese (in addition to a small baby gift). The party was held at 5:00 on a Saturday evening and was a very classy affair.

Bear Necessities

The purpose of this shower is to bring the necessities for the first time mom. i.e.: diapers, burp cloths, shampoo, baby powder, thermometers, onesies, etc... Use tons of teddy bears for decorations and the cake can have a teddy bear theme. For game awards, give out necessities like dish cloths and soaps and such. You can even get them with a bear theme!

Re: Baby Shower Themes

Now I need ideas for my BFF who is having her first (at 44) and has a frog, dragonfly theme. She ain't making it easy! I am in charge of games and prizes and I'm having a hard time trying to tie that into her theme.

We did a bear necessities shower for a second time mom who had all the regular baby stuff.  So, we gave her a lot of formula, bottles, diapers, etc that she does not have left over from the older one.  We had the invitations custom made with bears on them, and all of the decorations had bears.

Also, we have had an "older baby" shower.  With this kind of theme, we give them things that the baby will use from six months on because they never get given that sort of stuff.  A lot of mothers get overblown with newborn stuff and have nothing for the older baby.
