First Birthday Planning!!!

James will be 1 on August 30th. Been working on planning his party. Thought about having people and not having people. Think we have decided to invite Grandparents and 3 of our friends that have babies his age (BTW when do you quit calling them babies??) The theme is rubber duckies...found plates and everything....just looking for the cake.

My problem. Is entertaining required?? The kids are all around James' age so games are pretty much out....we have plenty of toys to play with though. The parents are what I am worried about. What is required as far as they are concerned....just talking and watching the kids???

What about time?? how long should it last?? 2 hours?? or should there not be an end time and everyone leaves whenever??

Also what are some good toys for James' age?? Like what would he start getting interested in between now and Christmas?? We plan on MegaBlocks, but no ideas after that. Plan to walk the toy aisle with my husband and see what we find.

Thanks ahead of time for all help.

Having just family and a few friends is fine for a first birthday. Believe me, it means more to you than to him. He won't remember it at all. And I don't think you need to plan any games. 1-2 hours should be fine. Let the kids play together, chat with your company, have cake & presents and you're done. Remember to take lots of pictures, though!

Yep it sounds good to me too. We had all the neices and nephews at Gavin's first birthday (ages ranging from 1-10 years old) plus 2 SIL's my brother, grandparents..the works. We just did cake and ice cream and I gave a small party favor for each kid..like a hot wheel for the boys. I did not plan any orgnaized games or anything.

Maddie hates sitting in her highchair so I am getting her one of those booster seats with a tray for her birthday (will be one 9/15). Plus I want to get a rid on toy that has a place for mommy or daddy to push from behind. That is all I have come up with so far. Clothes are great at this age because they don't care really about presents.
