Ok... I think I have an answer for you now, Meagan!

Boils are caused by the germ Staphlococcus aureus. It gets under the skin, causes infection, white blood cells flood in to fight the infection, causing the lump/pus. They do happen in healthy people when their resistance is down, for example if you are sick or have a decrease in nutrition.

I didn't really find any way to prevent it - it seems kinda like cold sores, when you get 'em , you get 'em - especially at the most inconvenient times! Anywho, I would think good nutrition, keeping the area clean & dry, as well as treating the boils as soon as you see them would definitely help. (Bring to a head - warm cloths or salves/-pop-then dress with antibiotic cream.)

I hope this helps!

I was just wondering what you all think.... would it be better to have each person address their issue in an individual thread, rather than replying to this single "Ask-A-Nurse" thread? I was just wondering because I counted 32 posts for this thread already. Let me know what you think!

Kim,

Thanks for answering my question. I'll give my old doctor's office a call tomorrow. A new doctor has taken over the practice. I've just been putting off calling for an appointment for a yearly exam. I just dread going, and it's even worse with a new doctor. It's so humiliating to have a total stranger looking "down there", even though I know he's seen it all before. (At least I hope I don't have anything he hasn't seen before. )

To answer your question about expanding this thread, I think it would be great if an Ask the Nurse forum could be created instead of everyone asking questions in just this thread. I think what you and Genie are doing is great, and I think it would be really popular.

Thanks again!

No problem, Jennifer!

I'm with you on dreading making THAT appt! It's just the thought... I thought I was the only one who thought that!

I'm glad you are going to call & get an appt.! Everyone's cycle is so different & it will be good to have your MD do a check up and address all of your specific questions. Write them down so you can be sure to ask at your appt.! If you have really heavy periods -- I know of people that can saturate a super tampon and part of a pad in 2 hrs. -- they can give you medication to help!

Good luck!

Yes- I think Ask A Nurse either needs it's own forum or we need to start new threads for each question here. That will make it much easier for others to look at if they have the same question as well, and you won't have to answer it over and over.

Kim sorry about the question thing with Meagan I was not sure you saw it. I like your idea and I am glad it is working. I would ask Tara if you can make it a sub forum or if people she just post thier question in the General Health area. I like either one. Doing so well.
I do appreciate you pointing that out for me, Anne! I could have very well missed it.... I'm kinda dingy sometimes! I appologize if I might have sounded short with my response... definitely not my intention!

I'll have to ask Tara what would be best to do... I just wanted to see what you all thought about it & what would be easiest.

Thanks so much, Annie!!

I think a sub-forum was the original plan. I will check with Dawn and Wendy to make sure, and let you all know.

Just a little update:
Deucey went to his Dr today (had 5 shots ) and she knew immediately upon walking into the room that it was eczema. The medication to use every night will be $97 for 3 tubes (total of 300 grams) and we don't know the cost of the compounded stuff that he needs to use twice a day. The expensive stuff would have bene over $400 without insurance!!!

I am at least relieved to know what it is and to ahve a treament plan. I hope it clears up quickly- he's been scratching and scratching.

Poor Deucey!!

Give him a big hug from me! I hope he feels better soon!

Thanks- I will. Poor little guy!! I really hate that his head (under his hair) itches so bad!!

Re: Heavy periods

Hi! I have a question about heavy periods.

My periods started again when Henry was about nine months old (I was breastfeeding). Each one I've had seems so much heavier than they were before he was born. I have to change a super absorbent tampon every 1- 1 1/2 hours. I had a c-section delivery, and I'm not taking any medication (birth control pills). Also, I had a little bit of spotting between my last period and this one, which is something I've never had happen before.

My question is what do doctors consider a heavy period to be? I tried looking this up on webmd, but didn't find an answer to my question. My gynecologist moved at the beginning of the year, and I haven't gotten around to finding a new one. Is this something I should talk to a doctor about right away or can it wait a few more weeks?

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents worth. Tyler was a c-section and my period started back at about 4 months. However, it was so heavy, I was having to wear a super tampon AND a pad and change every hour. If you've read any of my horror stories, you know I am terrified of blood as I hemorraghed after Cody was born ... and now anything heavier than normal freaks me out! At any rate, not only did I get this heavy period, but I got it every 2 to 3 weeks. And it was real clotty, which I wasn't used to (might be more info than you need - LOL) and lasted for a solid week or more at a time. Five months later, I'm finally back to near normal. Still a little heavy for me on about the second day, but not to the point that I freak out every time I go to the bathroom.

So -- no real advice except to say that I've been there, done that. I moved too, so I waited it out versus going to the doctor. I debated finding one and asking to be put back on the pill just until things evened out. With the other two kids, I went back on the pill right after quitting breastfeeding and within a cycle or two, things were fairly normal.

Good luck -- would love to hear what the doc says once you get to one!

Kim I did not think you were short with me, I just thought you were answering the question, that is all.

Tara thanks for checking it at.

AngC glad things are looking up for you and your I am sure you will both be feeling lots better after the first 24 to 48 hrs of treatment.

Dawn that sounds scary. I do know I flow heavier now then I did before I had Alisha and I did not have a C-section. I to was scared because I did not like plus I was not use to it. Called my doctor and said some women do flow more heavy after a child. Wishing you all the best of luck in this area.

I keep missing the Ask A Nurse Forum
I'm sorry for not being prompt with your problems
I'll be more observant in the future

Dawn I am having the same thing going on here too. I have only started having periods again and they have been super heavy. But this is the first time in like 5 years I have not been on any type of birth control so I just assumed that this was normal... I hope they will slow down a bit cause it makes it hard to go anywhere!

Angie what kind of medication did they give him? Maddie has horrible eczema and nothing I have tried has ever really worked. I am afraid she will have scars from where she has itched and broken the skin!

Meagan, I know what you mean about not being able to go anywhere. I use a pad and a super plus tampon, and I can still feel it leaking. I feel so gross when I have to go anywhere.

I looked on my tampon box, and it says the tampons absorb 12-15 grams. I've been using about ten a day, plus the pads. It seems like a lot of blood to lose.

I checked my insurance company's website, and I couldn't find the new doctor in our network. There's one other ob/gyn in town, but the women I know who've gone to him haven't had positive things to say. The only time I can go is after DH gets home from work at 3:30pm and my other options are over 30 miles away. I don't think I can get to them before their offices close. I will not take my kids with me when I'm having a pelvic exam.

Meagan- the two medicines are: fluocinolone oint w/petrolatum & Elidel cream.

I'm supposed to take him out of the bath and slather the fluocinolone oint w/petrolatum on him while he's still wet... it's vaseline mixed with some kind of medication. The fluocinolone is a compound medication that the pharmacy (Walgreen's) mixes up and it only cost $7.

The other medication is Elidel cream (pimecrolimus). Here's a link about the Elidel:
Elidel cream

It's EXTREMELY expensive through our insurance. I'm going to ask her for a prescription for a year's worth next time we take him in (in 2-3 weeks) because I can send it to the mail order pharmcay and get 3 months worth for $35, as opposed to one month's worth for $97.

Well cost is not a problem since we get everything free thru the Army. I am going to ask about getting Maddie something prescription because the lotions they recommended just do not do anything.
