Birth Control and Breastfeeding

I've started taking the pill again over the past few weeks. Besides the fact that is makes me feel like dookie .... it seems that Kale stopped nursing as much the first couple of weeks. He is now back to nursing like he was ... but has this ever happened to anybody else? Should I just stop taking the pill?

Roxanna,

Are you taking a progestin only pill? Supposedly they don't hurt your milk supply but I've heard otherwise. The "regular" ones do decrease milk supply. I'm not taking either though so I don't really have any personal experience.

I started taking the "mini-pill" just after my 6 week postpartum appt. And right around that time, Sydney started getting really fussy. So not knowing what was causing her fussiness, I quit taking it and haven't been back on it since.

I have also heard that they can decrease your milk supply. They are also supposed to decrease the chances of getting any breakthrough bleeding while nursing, but I know that's a crock.

There are pills that are designed for breastfeeding mothers that aren't supposed to affect the milk supply or the baby. I don't know what you're taking, but I would ask the doctor about any concerns you have.

I tried the mini pill ... did the same for us Leah!

I'm taking the regular birth control pill. Now that Kale is one .. the chances for anything harmful getting into my milk and transferring to him are so minimal. He is back to nursing 5 - 7 times a day .. the first few weeks were just tough. And not to mention that the pill makes me feel like crap!!
