Halloween Costume Ideas

I know it's two months away, but have you started planning your child's halloween costume? I don't like buying costumes, so I've been trying to come up with what Alexander will be this year so that we can make sure we have everything he needs.

I have no clue what we'll dress him up as. He'll be two, so what is a good costume for his age? I don't want to put make-up on his face because I think he's still too young, and he doesn't like anything over his face unless he's playing hide-and-seek.

Any suggestions?

We are starting to pull out the Halloween stuff and go through all our costumes. We keep them all. So we've goa a few to go through.

At age two ... there are so many things you can be. Cowboy, space ranger, clown, dog, cat, dinosaur, cow .... all can be made with a plain colored sweatsuit and then you can paint or add stuff to it ... no makeup required!

Roxanna - I told Billy I thought dressing Alexander up like a cowboy would be neat and that he would have fun playing the part.

But my husband being the football fanatic that he is hates the Dallas Cowboys and said that his child was not dressing up like a cowboy during football season. So that's a good costume that's been vetoed already!!

Caitlyn was a turtle when she was two!! Absolutely adorable with those blond pigtails!! I made it from a dark green sweatsuit and some felt. Then, instead of hot glueing the felt onto the suit, I just whip-stitched it on and she was able to wear the seatsuit all winter long!!

Cody was a skunk one year ... absolutely adorable! You can make just about anything out of a sweatsuit or those footed PJ's!

He could be a wizard. With the new Harry Potter movie comming out this November, I am sure that will be a popular costume.

Halloween Costumes for Boy

What did you dress your 1 year old in for first REAL Halloween? Last year, DS was only 2 months old and I dressed him as a pumpkin, but don't want to do that this year. We are actually going to trick or treat. Need ideas!

Is your son going to be walking most of the time or riding in a stroller? Adam is going to be 9 mos. at Halloween so I'm going to make his stroller into a tractor using posterboard and have him wear overalls with a flannel shirt. His brothers are older so we'll be doing alot of walking!
Alex and kyle went as Pooh Bear the first Halloween they could walk so next year we're going to continue the tradition with Adam and he's going as Pooh.

Well, I dressed Drew as a pumpkin for his first 2 real halloweens' (14 months and 26), so I'm afraid I'm not much help.

But what about doing something simple like a lion of tiger. Black pants are easy enough. For the top you just need some animal print material. You can make a loose smock type pull-over and use eyeliner on his face to draw in whiskers and nose. Hair for rag dolls would make a great mane for a lion, too.

Or a clown, that's pretty easy.

Or a hobo - you burn the end of a cork, let it cool, and then put the soot on the face to make it look dirty. Dress in old raggy clothes (you can get them for cheap at garage sales or Good Will or the Salvation Army). Take a stick (could use a plastic bat), tie a bandana on the end and there you go!

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Alexander was 13 months last Halloween and we took the cheap way out. He had Superman pajamas, so we put red socks on him and let him be Superman. He had fun and was very cute!!

How about a pirate? I saw a really neat pirate play set yesterday, so I have pirates on the brain, but it doesn't seem like a difficult costume.

We haven't even thought about what he is going to be yet

I remember seeing Cody's picture when he was a skunk.....he was SO cute!

Last year Deucey was 2 months old and we bought a "Lil' Devil" set (onsie, pants & hat) from Target- it was too precious. This year he's going to be a little yellow duck from a Simplicity pattern I found. It also includes a pattern for a Lady Bug, Lamb, Pumpkin.... seems real easy to make!!

Here's a link ot the pattern (with a picture of a darling child in Deucey's duckie costume)

Simplicity 9318 Halloween Costumes

Angie, What a great link!!
The duck is such a cute costume....you have to take pictures!! The Disney Costumes are adorable!! They look a little complicated for a one-time use (IMO) but they are absolutely precious!! On the other hand Bob The Builder looks fairly simple?!

Here's an idea if you have a little girl...my niece was this last yr and she looked so adorable...
a black kitty. She wore a black sweatshirt with black sweatpants, had felt kitty ears on a headband and a tail pinned on her bum. Then she wore black socks with black shoes.

Hey Guys..... I merged these two posts together because they are similar and mostly because they both had some really great links in them that I thought everybody could use!! I hope this helps!!

I think Kimmy is going to be a Fairy Princess. She is going to look adorable!!
Good call Shelia!

Gavin I think is going to be a pirate. We have most of the accessories all ready and I think I am going to get some pants and a top from wal-mart..garanimals! I still have no idea what Maddie is going to be. Something I can put together with a sweatsuit I am sure!
Awww, you guys, please take lots of pictures of the pirates and ducks and pumpkins and princesses and kitties and all the other costumes, I can't wait to see them!!

Nicholas has said he wants to be a Ninja but he has also said Pirate??? He needs to make up MY mind!!!
Argh..today gavin said he wanted to be a Bee.
Shelia- I like Bob the Builder but I'm into ducks right now (his 1st Birthday was Rubber Ducky, I'm in the process of making the guest/baby bathroom Rubber Ducky) and I just couldn't resist the pattern!

Meg- I like the Bumble Bee costume too... maybe next year if he doesn't have his own ideas for something by then?!

I love Halloween!
ME too! I looked at Halloween costumes that were bees today but I have a hard time buying something that is $20 that he will only wear one time. I was hoping to find a shirt that was black and yellow striped and then go from there. Still looking. He may be a pirate yet!
