The reason some men are infertile is because their sperm contains DNA damage that stops them from fertilizing an egg. That's the result of research by Dr Ramadan Saleh, published in a recent issue of Fertility and Sterility. Dr. Saleh examined the sperm of 92 men with fertility problems. Twenty-five percent of the men had sperm that appeared perfectly normal. However, upon genetic testing, it turned out that the sperm of about 50% of these men contained damaged DNA. This raises concerns that in vitro fertilization methods like intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (Icsi) may pass on genetic damage to offspring, since there is a higher rate of infertility-linked birth defects among Icsi-conceived babies.
