Baby temperature

I was telling a friend of mine recently that I take my children's temperature rectally and she thought I had lost mind. Does anybody else take their kids temperature rectally?

Depends on the age of the baby and the axillary temp...  If the axillary was high enough that it worried me I would take a rectal to verify before calling the Doc.  Otherwise I didn't bother...

Nope never did, the very idea grossed me out.  I bought one of those expensive ear thermometers when they first came out when the pediatrician recommended it, so I never worried about it.

My ped that we have now recommends it. Frowns on the ear, says since their ear cannal is so small its not very accurate.  I however cannot convince myself to do that. So I do ear and if it worries me then I do under arm. (depending on age of child)

ear thermometers would be enough for me. I couldn't take that rectal thing but if it comes from the professionals and if I don't have any choice, hmm...let me think about it.

As far as I know, getting the baby's temperature by a rectal thermometer is the most accurate. However, I didn't use it because I'm scared.

My little girl's doctors take it rectally but I also just use ear thermometers.smile.gif
