Turkey cooking question

Thread Starter

This year I am cooking 2 turkey breasts in the same oven bag.  This may seem like a silly question but how long do I cook it ...

The breasts are about 8 lbs a piece ... do I combine that into 16 lbs and cook for that weight ... or since they are separate birds do I cook for 8lb time?  ... my guess is the lesser time because it won't take as long for the internal temp to reach that of a true 16lb bird but ????  I don't want to screw this up!!!! lol

you could call the butterball turkey hotline :)

Do you have a meat thermometer?  Push it into the center of the breast (not all the way thru).  It needs to be 165 degrees.  Check them after the cooking time for 8-10 lbs.  They will most likely need to cook slightly longer since you are doihg 2 at one time, but not much.  Checking the temp is the best way to make sure you don't over or under cook them.  A decent meat thermometer will be anywhere form about $3 up to $15.

Yep, they were talking about this on the radio today.  It cooks faster than a bigger bird, to do two smaller ones.  I would think it will take a little bit longer just because the oven is fuller, but not as long as a 16lb bird.  I would go for the longer time in the cooking range (I think mine usually gives a range of time) and then check with the thermometer.
