Surgery Update

Thread Starter

Well, the surgeon (after confering with alot of other specialists) decided not to mess w/ FIL's lung.  They figured his chances with the double surgery were about 66%, but went up to 95% if they just did the the heart.  They did a triple bypass.  The dr said one of hte arteries was so damaged he barely made it thru - said that one definitely old damage from his previous heart attacks.  The other two he said went easy as pie, much better than he expected.

Directly after the surgery, FIL looked MUCH better than he has in a long time.  He had alot of color and was breathing easier.  I guess we never noticed just how bad it had gotten since it happened over time.  Today they had him up and walking around.  They hope to have him home this weekend, or by Monday at the latest.  He will stay home for about a week or so to recouperate.  When the surgeon thinks he can handle it, then they will go in and remove the part of the lung with the cancer.  One of the reason they are going back in so soon is they don't want the graft on his heart to adhere to his lung.

Drew got to see him today, so he is feeling better about it all.  He lost it last night, yelling at us.  I know he was just worried, but still unacceptable behavior. He is much better today and apologized to both of us.

Since Ally can't go in to see him, we are trying to set up a phone call so she can talk to Papa.  But she has behaved well so far.  If we can get her to see or talk, maybe we can avoid the delayed reaction altogether.  Here's hoping.

And of course, the drama with everyone is going on.  I'm staying out of it.  Mom and dad don't need the added stress, especially right now.  *sigh*  Families - gotta love'em!

I will get on as I can, but we are running around like crazy right now.  Thank you everyone for all the good thoughts.  Keep them coming, please!  We still need them.

Glad to hear how well he is doing!

You really don't realize it went people are going down little by little, even if it is your own body Brenda.  When I was so anemic I needed a transfusion I didn't realize how crappy and tired I felt till I started to get better.  Jim didn't realize how pale I had gotten till my color started to come back.
