This is what set me off today: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/07/circumcision-ban-stirs-co_n_832340.html
I am guessing making circumcision of infant boys illegal subject to $1,000 in fines and up to 1 year in jail is a liberal agenda. This is regulation overboard for me. I don't have boys, so it's not really my issue, but I strongly feel it shouldn't be illegal for those who want to do it.
I choose not to have my baby girls' ears pierced. There is no health reason for ear piercing and it hurts. It is also a body change that the baby did not ask for. Pierced ears can also get very infected and this can cause problems. Children can get into fights where the earrings are tugged and a kid could loose an earlobe. Even when the earrings are removed the scars remain forever. Do I think ear piercing mothers should be sent to jail for it? Heavens, no, that would be stupid.
Our jails are already overcrowded with actual criminals. Is San Francisco ready to build a special jail for parents who had their babies circumcised? Because that's what it would mean since about 50% of parents of boys have this done. Do these people really deserve to share a jail cell with the guy who mugged a 7-11 or the gal who shot her boyfriend? They're actually considering putting this on the same level with a drunk driving charge.
This is what annoys me about liberals. They want to regulate everything. You can't be fat, smoke, eat unhealthy foods or just throw stuff you don't want in the trash. No, you have to be told how to live your life every second of the day.

Here's what gets me upset about Tea Partiers: http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2010/10/tea-party-candidate-tells-voter-food-safety-up-to-us/
I can't even say conservatives, because they seem content just to pray a lot and not tax the rich (which doesn't make a whole of sense to me since most of them aren't rich, but whatever). Okay, food safety is something that I do want regulated. I like going to the grocery store and not having to check my beef for maggots or my canned goods for body parts of rat. I don't want to worry if there is industrial waste in my drinking water. For these conveniences of not having to worry about my food, my water or my drugs being safe and being what they are supposed to be, I am willing to pay taxes. I think if most people really think about it carefully, they would agree life without the constant concern of food poisoning is worth it. I am sure one bad case of food poisoning would make the rest more than happy to agree food needs to be regulated for safety.
I like plugging in my tv and not getting electrocuted. I try to make not getting electrocuted part of my daily routine. I like going around my home and plugging things in and switching on and off switches without getting electrocuted. I like getting into my car and not having an explosion. I have made not getting blown to bits a lifestyle choice and it's one I plan to keep up for life. So if means paying a few extra taxes so the bridges I drive on don't collapse or my hair dryer doesn't kill me, then I'm cool with that. I think most people are.
I don't think deregulating everything is going to make the world a wonderful place, because there are things like food and electrical appliances that I want to see forever regulated. I want to call 911 and have someone fully qualified to show up in a timely manner to help me if I need it. I want that police officer to catch that serial killer. I want to go to a national park and actually get to see nature as it was before too many people showed up. I like these services. I use these services. I want to see them continued indefinitely. I even want to see a wet floor sign in Walmart on recently mopped floors, because I don't really enjoy falling down.
I'm not saying the government couldn't stand a few cut backs, but let's be reasonable. The FDA and the USDA need to stay, because I don't think anyone wants their drugs to all be sugar pills instead of what is listed on the label and I don't know of anyone who wants maggot filled meat. Gross!
We don't need to go overboard and freaking regulate male private parts either. What are they going to do? Make little boys drop their pants the first day of school and arrest their parents if things don't pass "inspection"? This is just nuts - on both sides. Some common sense please. For heaven's sake, tax the billionaires! You can give millionaires with less than 10 million a break. Those that make over 10 million a year make load off of everyone, they can pay some dang taxes like everybody else. At least that's what I think. What do you think?
I'm with you all the way here, Grace. I don't think I'd call outlawing circumcision a "liberal" position and I really don't think it's all that heavily supported, either. (I wonder what you would do about Jews and Muslims, for whom it's a religious obligation? First Amendment is still on the books!) I think w/r/t the Tea Party that what we have going on now is a kind of denial of reality and rebellion against the changes society is going through. It will pass and in fact I think the 2010 election was its high point. The backlash is really strong right now.
