Dog reek

Apparently, some past tenant or tenants kept dogs locked up in this house for months at a time possibly not even putting them out to use the bathroom. I have shampooed the rug as many as five times a week for several weeks and it hasn't really made a dent. I am going to try the baking soda method tonight which worked on vomit in my last place. I don't like dogs. I don't have a dog. Plus I think I am allergic to them. I sure don't want my house to smell like a dog. How do I get the dog smell out? It's bad when there is no hint of cat smell when I own two cats, but the dog reek about makes me want to gag on wet days.

hate to say it but if it's that bad you may need to tear out the carpet and padding and replace.  Sounds like the padding has sucked up a ton of Dog urine or something.

Not just urine.  *insert non existent barf smilie*    We will be replacing the carpet as soon as we can afford it, but this is all over the house.  That's going to be a big expense.

Yuck, animal urine smells terrible when it is damp outside. BARF is right! You may even need to replace some of the subflooring if it is especially bad. You will be able to tell when you rip up the carpet. We lived with subfloor in several rooms at our old house because the dog pee smell was so bad. That sux Lenora :(

I hate when that happens. I have a dog which is rather obnoxious. Poops everywhere even in his own place.

I think they're right Lenora, better replace your carpet and padding. That sure is a pain in the neck!

I can't afford to right now.  A little over 2000 sq ft of carpeting is a lot of money.  When I replace it, it will be with fake hardwood floors.  I know of at least two large boxers who were locked up in the house for five or six years and seldom let out.  I read dogs with greasy hair leave more stink behind than other dogs and boxers are a little on the greasy side.  What kind of owner doesn't let their dog out to poop?  And who wants to live in a house full of dog poop?  *barf smilie inserted*  I guess it doesn't matter now.  Dh had a business meeting (which went great, yay!) at noon today and the house house reeked of dog (wet, urine, etc).  The baking soda worked for the day.  Fortunately (and unfortunately since dh is allergic to perfume) the lady wore a lot of perfume.  It was very overpowering.

Lenora, my SIL had a similar problem in her house when they moved in.   They ended up pulling up all the carpet and padding and just living with the subfloor for a long time.  She carpeted rooms as they could afford it.  It took her 4 years I think to afford to carpet the whole house (She did bedrooms one by one, and then the living room and hallway last).

I have one room I can't even use because I am allergic to dogs.   I have shampooed the rug once a week or more since we got here and the smell has not cut down.  I have used tons of baking soda and everything else.  I fear there is no way to get rid of this stink without riping out the carpets and sealing the floor.  I think it may have sunk into the cement (it's in the basement).  I think maybe a hoarder or just really filthy people lived here before.
