Would you take in your grandchildren?

There has been a big increase in grandparents raising their grandchildren, in New Zealand, for various reasons - often drug related. Our child social services agency has a policy where it is more likely to place children with family members if they need to be removed from their own parents.

If, some time in the future for those of you with younger children, your son/daughter went off the rails and left two young children to be raised, would you take them? How would it affect your life? Would you take both or would you be happy to work with another family member, taking one each? Or would you not feel obliged to take the grandchildren, given that you've raised your children already, but would support another younger family member taking them?

When my girls are old enough to have children, I'll be near or over 60.  That is pretty old for a start over.  Hopefully, my girls will not get pregnant at really young ages or get in trouble with the law or drugs, but if the unhappy event arose that my children could not/would not raise their own children, I would, of course, see to their children.  I sure wouldn't let any grandchild of mine get caught in the foster system which IMO is terrible.  Hopefully, though, my girls will stay on track and not need me to be anymore than a visiting or occasionally babysitting grandma.
