Costume for small child

Did you have problems with your child NOT wanting to wear a costume when they were small?

I've found some really adorable things that I could get or make for Jonathan, but I know that he hates hats or having anything on his face, so that rules out glasses and masks. So, I think we're going to have to go another way.

Any ideas or words of wisdom for a first Halloween?

Alexander was 13 months for his first Halloween (we skipped his very first year where he would have been one month - we thought that was just too young). For his first trick-or-treating, we let him be Superman. He had Superman pajamas so we just put those on him (it's one that has the attachable cape), put red socks on him and he was ready to go. I would just stick with something simple like that. Personally, I love the pjs as costumes. They are comfortable for the kids and can be used long after Halloween.

Good luck coming up with something for Jonathan.

Dina, I had that problem with Nicholas on his first Halloween, he was in the *pulling off * stage...he kept pulling shoes/socks/hats off.
I'll check and see if I can come up with any ideas, maybe a couple of links.

I'm having the same problem with my daughter. She will be 1 (she was born on 10/30). I have found some ideas (some were expensive) at www.disneystore.com Also, there is a website called www.buycostumes.com and they have some cute ideas. The problem with buying on the internet is paying the shipping charges. Also, I have some ideas of homemade costumes. It might be a cute tradition to start with your kids. Some thoughts are a lovely lamb, tie-dyed tot, clown, artist. I got these ideas from the October issue of Parents. If you would like the directions on making these, let me know and I will forward them along. I hope this helps you in your quest for costume ideas and just know that you are not alone!!

If anyone has ideas, I would like to have my daughter be a turtle, but I haven't found any costumes. Anyone know of any?

dnjkilbey,

I made Caitlyn's turtle costume a couple yrs ago. Green sweat pants and shirt, some yellow, tan & green felt and some poly fill. Then I stitched the shells to the shirt and the tail to the pants so that I could remove them and she can use the suit all winter!!

(If I still have the shell and if it'll fit your kid (she's was wearing a size three suit), would you be interested in it? I could probably either sell for reasonable price or lend if you help with postage.)

For last year halloween costum for my 16 month old son I bought a white sweat suit and put various size polka dots all different colors all over , tied those little poms to his shoes and made a bow tie out of felt and tied it around his neck loosly(he didn't know it was even there when I tied it loosly)with a piece of ribbon. He looked adorable. Them for his candy bucket I went to Wal-Mart and they just happen to have some material that was stars all over white material that were all different colors and I just made a really QUICK bag out of it using that iron sew stuff it worked great for that. I wish that I could get my scanner to work and I would post some pictures.

What such adorable costumes!!! Your children are beautiful as well. Thank you for the great ideas. As for the costume, my daughter is only going to be 1, so I don't think she will fit into it. But I do greatly appreciate the offer!! I finally just caved in and bought a costume from the store because I have been sick for about 2 weeks and the energy to actually make a costume has gone out the window. Plus, my husband and I are in a wedding next weekend and my dh's birthday is on the 30th and her party on the 27th, so I'm kind of backed up with things to do. Thank you for letting me get that off of my chest. Happy Halloween to all
