Diarrhea

Maddie has been having diarrhea for the past 24 hours or so. I think it is related to her antibiotics but I am not sure. Is there anything I can give her for it?

Yep, it could be from the antibiotics... if they gave her what they term a broad-spectrum antibiotic, it kills both the good & bad bacteria. Does she like yogurt?? I would give her some of that if you can get her to eat it. The live cultures help put good bacteria back where it should be. I'm not sure if Immodium or lomotil can be given to small children... I'd check w/the pediatrician's office before giving that. But I think the best bet would be yogurt. Keep pushing fluids, too!!

She has not wanted to each much of anything today. She is finally eating some chicken nuggets. She is on Keflex. We don't have any yogurt...I am not sure if she will eat it or not. Guess I could try and get some tomorrow and try that. Why does yogurt help?

I'm glad Maddie is feeling better!

The live cultures in yogurts help reestablish the base of "good" bacteria in the intestinal system. When you are given a broad-spectrum antibiotic, it kills ALL the bacteria.... good & bad, which leaves you prone to diarrhea & yeast infections.

Main thing with diarrhea.... HYDRATION!! Fluids, pedialyte, whatever they like to drink! If diarrhea lasts over 24 hrs without ANY improvement, consult an MD.
