WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush plans to announce Friday that he is directing 500,000 members of the U.S. military to receive vaccinations against smallpox, a senior administration official said Wednesday.

The directive will be the first part of a coordinated program to protect Americans against a possible bioterror attack.

Is it true that this is not the old cow pox, small pox vaccine we got as kids and when I was in, but a new weapons grade vaccine that is relatively untested with serious and possibly long term side effects?

If it is true, I ask you and your dh's to seriously consider before agreeing to have this shot. MS was one of those 'side effects' from untested drugs in the Gulf War which is how I got it.

The vaccine does not contain the smallpox virus. It is made from vaccinia, a related virus that helps the body produce immunity to smallpox.

We have not heard anything about Court getting this. We think they are probably giving it to people that are deploying first. Anyone else heard anything???

Actually I had to go to a meeting at work regarding getting the smallpox vaccination. In reading the exclusions, I'm currently not a candidate to receive it, due to ttc & dermatological issues. However, they have done testing & they are starting to immunize health care workers as well as the military. I would recommend checking out the information online at the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) to get the skinny on everything so you can make an informed decision.

Just don't take any medication or vaccine without being fully informed. I did and that's how I ended up with MS. Of course, I was also lied to about what exactly it was I was taking, too.

I agree with Lenora! Do your homework before getting the small pox vaccine.

Kimmer- I know your not to get because your TTC, but if me and DH wanted another in the near future would that hurt anything for us to concieve? Not sure if you'll know that answer, but i'm curious.

I'm against DH getting this shot because of all the side affects.... bad enough after afghanistan i found jumping spiders in the house (ok, i never seen jumoing spiders before so maybe they are normal maybe not but it wasn't until after he came back with his bags i seen them) and i just dont want him risking giving me, or the boys anything that can harm us and i surely dont want him to take something that may harm him now and/or ruin him plans for his/our future.

Missy,
From the literature I received, the TTC issue is related to females. They recommend that you wait at least 1 month (30 days) after getting the vaccine to get pregnant. Women who are currently pg, nursing or ttc should NOT get the vaccine. I didn't see any data on effects on the male's fertility.

Good luck!
