Gestational Diabetes

Okay, I hope this is not too confusing. My dh's cousin's wife who is pregnant with gestational diabetes had a terrible incident a few days ago and I was wondering what would happen next. She was just walking through the mall, when her eyes rolled back in her head, she started foaming at the mouth and she passed completely out. They took her to the hospital via ambulance. Her poor dh was beside himself with fear and worry (as I would have been, too!).

The doctors said her sugar was too low. What happens now? Will she have to stay in the hospital for awhile? Will they put her on bedrest? This is her 3rd child in around two years.

I would think they would put her on bedrest for a while. She may be one of the few who goes on insulin with gestational diabetes.

I had it and fortunatly I just had to watch my diet. But some ladies have to go on insulin to control it.

I hope Kim can give you some definite answers. The poor lady! That would be awful.

Wow.... how awful... I hope she's OK now!

For Gestational Diabetes ~~ it usually can be controlled just by diet. However, it sounds like this poor lady is going to need to be treated like an actual diabetic. I'm sure they will stabilize her, then plan a course of action... probably will include checking her blood sugar more often, diet modification, etc.....

Please let us know how she's doing...

It just happened yesterday or the day before I think. I haven't heard anything since then. Just that everyone is very worried about her. That spell seems very serious. Thanks Kim and Wendy!

I had Gestational Diabetes as well and controlled it by diet alone (not easy when all you crave is ice cream and fresh fruit LOL )

I hope they can get her stabilised quickly, but if this is her 3rd child in as many years her body may be trying to tell her it needs some time off.

I will be sending positive thoughts her way

I thought that too, Maree. That's an awful lot of pregnancies in just two years. They aren't even 11 months apart.

How far along is she again Grace? From my experience with diabetics, including gestational, again depending on how far along she is, I would imagine she'll be put on bed rest. But like Kim said, it can definitely be regulated.

I hope she's doing alright, that would sure be scary!
